A bit of a shake up in the career department

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Misc. life

Perhaps I shouldn’t say shake-up, because shake-up implies something that displaces people, and not in a good way either. Like an earthquake or something. When I was laid off years ago from my FT job as a website production manger type person (Gah – I wore so many hats I still can’t decide what I should call myself) THAT was a shake up. Suddenly I was out of a job. And we had two children. A mortgage. And car payments.

Little did I realize then that I would end up sitting here where I am today.

A few weeks ago, I was contacted by the lovely ladies at SavvyMom. Would I be interested in a writing gig?

I’ve been subscribing to the Ottawa version of their e-newsletter since the beginning. Why? It’s fun. It’s friendly. And I’m a sucker for localized content. It’s why I’m such a fan of local blogs and neighborhood newspapers like the Kitchissippi Times. I like knowing what’s happening in my ‘hood, and there are very few good sources for this kind of info, especially as it pertains to parent-related resources. And we moms (and dads) have to stick together. Ottawa is such a great city for kid stuff. There is always something going on, no matter the season. It’s one of the reasons I love living here as much as I do.

So yes, back to the subject at hand. You are looking at a new member of the Ottawa SavvyMom team. Yay! This means:

(a) I have a new, wonderful opportunity to do something I truly love for a smart and sassy publication I really admire. I will be writing (about things that are FUN!) for the Ottawa edition of SavvyMom.  It’s a great addition to the writing I already do, and now I get to share our family adventures with more people. Woot!

(b) I might be asking for your input now and again. And if you know of anything going on that Savvy readers might be interested in, in please let me know. A few of you already do, and I thank you for that. You are great.  (Anna E. I’m thinking of you right now!)

If you’re not familiar with SavvyMom, check out their website and consider signing up for the newsletter. Here’s a link to the archive of Ottawa-related issues. Toronto readers can check out past Toronto issues here. There’s a Calgary and Vancouver issue too.

Anyway, yes. I am happy as a clam today.

Okay. Must get coffee. There’s writing that needs to be done. :)

It’s so wonderful when you get to do something you love to do for someone else!
