Let’s talk about that weather, shall we?

Back in May, when the Kitchissippi Times changed to a monthly community news magazine format, I was asked to write a letter from the editor in each issue. I scoffed at the idea a bit at first. I mean really, do MORE people really need be exposed to my random thoughts? As it turns out, […]

A quick jaunt to the SJAM winter trail

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: - Westboro|Ottawa

Yesterday I took myself over to the new SJAM winter trail for a quick ski. It was my first time ever, even though it is embarrassingly close to where we live. I was walking down towards Westboro Beach when I encountered a lady making her way up to the parking lot. How was the trail, […]

Movies on the Beach (a.k.a. Friday Night Flicks) has turned into a great Ottawa summer tradition. And it’s free! We’ve had great fun in past years. Check out the lineup! There’s probably a movie playing near you at some point this summer: July 22 at Westboro Beach: Zootopia August 5 at Heritage Orleans Park: Minions August 19 […]

We live within easy walking distance of the Highland Park Lawn Bowling Club. My Westie readers probably know this place already. It’s been around for quite a while. (Ottawa history buffs can read more about the club here.) Every year the club members host an open house and every year we manage to miss it. […]

I needed some extra fuel at lunch today so I decided to head down to Westboro Village to check out the sandwich offerings at Piggy Market. The menu looked so GOOD I was completely incapable of making a decision. It was a four-way tie between these menu items: Turkey Sandwich – Olive Tapenade/Double Smoked Bacon/Tomatoes/Cheddar/Mustard […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our dog Piper who is kind of a big deal on Instagram. We also have two human daughters: Emma (20) and Sarah (18). During the day I work as a writer at The Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999. The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
