Apple crisp with toffee sauce

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food

This is the time of year I start to crave a particular combination of baked apples, butter, and sugar. And this weekend I decided to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Enter, the apple crisp: This recipe (mentioned at the bottom of this post) is pretty good, but if I’m really honest with myself I have to […]

Tomatoes are so summer

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Oh! Things!|Recipes and Food

I’d like to grow more veggies in our backyard, but we don’t have enough sun back there to support very many different plants. We do, however, have room for a few pots of herbs and some tomatoes. I bought four different varieties and this one is my favourite: It’s called a yellow pear tomato, and […]

Pad Thai craving

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food

I needed a quickie Pad Thai recipe to satisfy a lingering craving and prevent a large restaurant expenditure. This one fit the bill, although next time I’d use fewer noodles or make more sauce, and maybe toss a couple shrimp in there and a small handful of baby peas. But here’s a surprise, both kids […]

Drooling as I type

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: - Meals under 400 calories|Recipes and Food

Looking for a new recipe to try? This one is a keeper, and I’m actually looking forward to the leftovers! This is a Thai Tofu Quinoa Bowl from Chatelaine. You can grab the recipe right here. I used slightly less quinoa, and I didn’t have quite enough ginger, but WHOA nelly… is it ever good. It’s […]

For years, we’ve been driving past Silver Springs Farm, which is right on the edge of Bell’s Corners in Ottawa about five minutes from Bayshore Shopping Centre. I’ve always been intrigued by their roadside signs promising fresh garlic, but every year we somehow missed the small window of opportunity to check it out for ourselves. Well, this is a […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (15) and Sarah (13). I am the editor of the Kitchissippi Times, Capital Parent Newspaper, and a regular contributor to MediaSmarts.ca. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.

If you'd like to contact me, please use this form. If you're so inclined, you can read more about me here. Thank you for visiting!

The #dailylunches project – 850 lunches and counting!

Every day I eat lunch and take a picture. Here's the latest:

Created with flickr badge.

Click the photo for details: what it is, where I ate it (if it's worth a mention!) and how to cook it (if there happens to be a recipe). You can also read more about this project right here.

  • My latest post at the MediaSmarts website is about passwords. Is this something you've talked about with your kids? Given the proliferation of devices in households (often one per person now) it might be an important topic for discussion. How have you handled passwords in your household?
