a peek inside the fishbowl

Last week I had the opportunity to check out the new Farm Boy at the Rideau Centre before it opened to the public. I arrived a bit early and milled around the entrance near Shoppers. I waited five or ten minutes and in that time at least a dozen regular Rideau shoppers stopped to poke their […]

In this mini-series about gifts for people who have everything I’ve written about mittens, giftie things that make the world a better place from Me to We, and air plants. Today, I am putting forth an idea that I KNOW everyone would like but wouldn’t immediately consider to be a Christmas gift: dinner. I tell ya. If someone […]

Lunch at Holland’s Cake and Shake

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Ottawa|Recipes and Food

When I got in the car I started out with a very specific lunchtime destination: the newly renovated Corner Express convenience store in Hintonburg. It’s been relaunched as the Spadina Dina and had a grand opening on October 24. I’ve been determined to visit ever since I read about the proposed menu, which includes authentic […]

To review: every other Tuesday is my day off and I’m trying to use this time to recharge my batteries. No work, no meetings, minimal errands. Last time, I visited the Arctic via the Canadian Museum of Nature. It’s been awhile since I posted a report of a Tuesday adventure, but since my last missive it’s […]

Ketchup chips! So Canada!

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Oh! Things!|Recipes and Food

I included a very important story in my recent weekend reading roundup. A definitive ranking of Canada’s best ketchup chips was posted on the Chatelaine website and I thought it deserved a bit of extra investigation here. I was intrigued. As a fan of ketchup chips, I felt it was my duty to follow up […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (18) and Sarah (16). I am the managing editor of our community newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.

If you'd like to contact me, please use this form. If you're so inclined, you can read more about me here. Thank you for visiting!
