a peek inside the fishbowl

I hate wasting food. Last I was looking at three very spotty bananas withering on the countertop, and I asked myself, what’s a mamma to do? Answer: MAKE MUFFINS* * I do not consider myself a baker or a muffin maker. My muffin motivation was two-fold: (1) To use up the aforementioned bananas (2) to […]

I’m not a cookie baker. I’m a cookie EATER, but I’m not a cookie baker. So it goes without saying that every Christmas I feel like a failure in the cookie department. I just can’t motivate myself to mix together butter and sugar and crank out something that looks and tastes amazing. (Honestly, I prefer […]

The answer is yes, in case you were wondering. I made this salad for lunch yesterday and it turned out really well. BEHOLD: If you grew up in the era of soggy, mushy, overcooked Brussels sprouts this might be the recipe that changes your life forever. Here’s the original recipe. Clearly, the trick to avoiding […]

Saucy meatballs revisited

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food

Here’s the irony of dinnertime at this time of year: I am less inclined to cook and more inclined to eat. I blame short days and chilly temperatures! This recipe was one of our dinners this week, and I wanted to share it here because the girls were pretty excited about it. So was I, because […]

Tacos. Why do they have to be so meaty all the time?

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food

Awhile back I had an hamburger-related epiphany. I asked myself, self, do you like hamburgers or not? I decided I liked sharing a great dinner with friends and family. And I liked the act of eating a burger: something hot and delicious that doesn’t need a knife and fork. I liked the toppings too. But when […]

Awhile back I had no groceries or lunch ideas, so I decided to check out the big salad bar at Farm Boy. Have you ever tried it? It’s pretty darn good. I went in with a strategy: to skip the leafy green offerings and sample my way through the grain and veggie dishes instead. My instincts […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (15) and Sarah (13). I am the editor of the Kitchissippi Times, Capital Parent Newspaper, and a regular contributor to MediaSmarts.ca. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.

If you'd like to contact me, please use this form. If you're so inclined, you can read more about me here. Thank you for visiting!

The #dailylunches project – 938 lunches and counting

Every day I eat lunch and take a picture. Here's the latest:

Created with flickr badge.

Click the photo for details: what it is, where I ate it (if it's worth a mention!) and how to cook it (if there happens to be a recipe). You can also read more about this project right here.

  • My latest post on the MediaSmarts website is up, and it's about family social media accounts. (Yes! It's a thing! And I think it's pretty neat.) Is this something you do as a family? I'd love it if you left your two cents on the topic.
