Book swap!

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Swaps

A shade more expensive than the library, cheaper than the bookstore. It’s not too late to grab a book. (This note will remain here until the deadline for the book swap has passed. See below for new blog entries.) Share the post “Book swap!” FacebookTwitterGoogle+PinterestStumbleUponE-mail

Bloggy book swap!

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Swaps

I was lying in bed looking at one of several huge stacks of books in our bedroom, thinking about my, um, special relationship with books. Basically, I aquire them and cannot part with them. Ever. BUT, on that rare occasion I do give one or two away I like to know they are going to a good […]

Pay it forward (with handmade gifts!)

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Memes/blog awards etc|Swaps

[ETA: three participants have been found. Yay!] Don’t you love getting mail? I do. I reeeally love getting mail. There’s no better feeling than seeing something poking out of my mailbox and knowing it’s a surprise for ME. :) I’ve been scripting a post in my head about a new pay-it forward** project. And then I […]

Candy swap: the results

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Easy ways to make kids happy|Swaps

Awhile back I signed up for a candy swap hosted by Scattered Mom. Each person was to send $8 – $10 worth of candy to their swap partner. I decided to take the purist route and send mostly chocolate, brands that (I think) are only available in Canada. My partner was Renee. This is what I […]

Body hurt

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Misc. life|Ottawa|Swaps

My body hurts. In fact, I am finding it uncomfortable to sit upright in my desk chair. I have a slightly-smaller-than-egg-size bruise on my knee and I just woke up from a deep ten-hour sleep. And I am still tired. No wonder, I was attacked four times yesterday. Kristina (who, from now on, shall be […]

  • Rebecca: I love Instagram!!! Your account is awesome ;)
  • andrea tomkins: Maybe the black groundhogs are slowly taking over Ottawa like the black squirrels did!
  • andrea tomkins: Good gourds! ;)
  • binki: Looks like gourds.
  • Sara: We have a family of groundhogs behind our house, about six of them and one is completely black. We're in the bayshore area, so there's two!
  • andrea tomkins: Frankly, it's impossible to point to a movie/doll/Princess Candyland and blame that for any outcome. There are so many other factors involved in raisi

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (17) and Sarah (15). I am the managing editor of our community newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times, and a regular contributor to MediaSmarts.ca. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.

If you'd like to contact me, please use this form. If you're so inclined, you can read more about me here. Thank you for visiting!

The #dailylunches project – 1000 lunches and counting

Every day I eat lunch and take a picture. Here's the latest:

Created with flickr badge.

Click the photo for details: what it is, where I ate it (if it's worth a mention!) and how to cook it (if there happens to be a recipe). You can also read more about this project right here.
