A Thanksgiving surprise

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Publishing/writing/career stuff

Some of you are here because you saw the article on the Ottawa Citizen’s website, or maybe you saw the giant photo of me and the youngest on the cover of the Saturday paper. (!!) So, welcome! Can I also say, this is weird. If you were in my house we’d be standing awkwardly in […]

Bucket lists and lunches

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Misc. life|Recipes and Food

Bucket lists. This is something I was thinking about at a recent lunch I attended at Coconut Lagoon that was hosted by Ford Canada. Ford invited a bunch of local bloggers for a meal (spoiler alert: it was amazing) and a chat with Robin Esrock, the author of The Great Global Bucket List (among other […]

On Monday we put the latest issue of the newspaper to bed and sent it off to the printer. It’s always so gratifying when that happens! Tuesday was supposed to be my “day off” but you can probably guess what happened instead: LIFE. I would have liked to turn off my brain and refill my […]

Many moons ago I was interviewed for an article about blogging. This, in itself, is not that unusual. Sometimes I’m interviewed and I never hear about it again or see the resulting article. Other times, people start tweeting and emailing as soon as the publication hits their mailbox. This was one of those times! 15+ years […]

Awhile back I was at a blogging conference, in the audience, listening to a panel of speakers. I can’t even remember what the topic was about, but someone I knew from the blogging world stood up during the question and answer time and shared her exasperation about (a) not being on the receiving end of […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our dog Piper who is kind of a big deal on Instagram. We also have two human offspring: Emma (24) and Sarah (22). During the day I work as a writer at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999. The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
