One afternoon at Ottawa Bluesfest

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Ottawa

I have to confess, I’ve never been to Ottawa Bluesfest. I generally don’t love crowds, sweating, or standing around… so really, there is little reason for me to go. The music festival scene is such a big part of summer in Ottawa, and I’m perfectly content to stay out of it. Isn’t that awful? Anyway, Mark […]

We were at my in-laws on a hot day last week when we were alerted to the fact that there was a crow hopping around the front lawn. Correction, it was hobbling, in a rather ungraceful kind of way. So of course, being the bird nerds that we are, we had to investigate. Turns out […]

This giveaway has officially ended! The name of the winner has been posted in the comments below. Thanks everyone for your entries and I hope to see you at Saunders Farm this summer! Fishbowl patron Saunders Farm is very well-known around Ottawa for the spooky fun they provide for Ottawa families around Halloween, but have […]

Movies on the Beach is one of the most fun things to do during the summer in Ottawa. It’s hosted by Majic 100 (who have renamed it Friday Night Flicks by the way) and it’s free! We’ve been to the one at Westboro Beach a few times, so if you’re planning on going, here’s what […]

At what age should a child be taught how to slice a banana? It’s something I found myself thinking about as I was chatting with Pat Gere, the director at OMS Montessori. Studies show that kids crave and thrive when given age-appropriate responsibilities, yet we find ourselves in a society that is becoming increasingly fearful of kids walking […]

  • Susan: We've never had a professional family photo done! Our family photos tend to be taken by others at a family event or on vacation. Never quite right:)
  • georgina: our last family photo session was back in October 2014.
  • Ann: At least 10 years ago.
  • meghan: Last one was when my kids were 6 & 4 and they are now 16 & 14!
  • coffee with julie: This is so sad. And it really does make it hit home that life is not everlasting. I'm sorry to hear your lost a friend, and feel terrible for her love
  • coffee with julie: I had a family photo shoot about one year ago and it's amazing to see how much the kids have changed in that short amount of time! I LOVE your photos.
  • Chris (@DadGoesRound): Our last family portrait was taken a month after my now 6 yr old (7 next month) was born. We now have an extra kid. Third child syndrome I guess. We k

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (15) and Sarah (13). I am the editor of the Kitchissippi Times and a regular contributor to MediaSmarts.ca. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.

The #dailylunches project – 1000 lunches and counting

Every day I eat lunch and take a picture. Here's the latest:

Created with flickr badge.

Click the photo for details: what it is, where I ate it (if it's worth a mention!) and how to cook it (if there happens to be a recipe). You can also read more about this project right here.
