Feeling trim, date night, and a new gig

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Ottawa

Well, friends, we are just past the halfway point with the Whole 30 thing and I have good news and bad news. Bad news: I cheated. You are technically not supposed to weigh or measure yourself at any point during the thirty days, but I did. I blame Mark! He weighed himself and announced a […]

I was bummed to miss the media preview of the newly renovated Canada Science and Technology Museum back in the fall and have been dying to pay a visit ever since to see what I’ve been missing. Happily, the opportunity to go presented itself earlier this week because the eldest was home for reading week […]

Winterlude: On a wintery weekday night in Ottawa

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Ottawa

David Reevely’s column about embracing the weather and creating a winter strategy for Ottawa has been percolating in my brain ever since I read it back in December. He’s on to something. I think if we, as a city, had a winter strategy we’d see a huge boost in tourism and in the number of local outings that […]

Coffee date at the Scone Witch

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Ottawa|Recipes and Food

Mark and I went for a quick cross-country ski this morning. Given the sub-arctic temperatures we had in Ottawa at Christmas and the usual freeze-thaw-freeze cycles, this represented his first outing on skis this year and only my second. Our destination: Pine Grove Trail. It’s an NCC trail in Ottawa’s east end, just off Davidson […]

How do you feel about the month of February in general? Let’s review the pros and cons: PROs The days are finally starting to feel a bit longer. It can be argued that February represents the “good” side of winter. It’s the end of a long cold season and we can still enjoy winter activities if we […]

  • Liz Dick: Just came across this forum now. Funny after all these years I've never seen it. Rummoli has been a family favourite of ours for four generations.

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (18) and Sarah (16). I am the managing editor of our community newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.

If you'd like to contact me, please use this form. If you're so inclined, you can read more about me here. Thank you for visiting!
