A wild (puppy) party at Casa Fishbowl

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: dog stuff

Piper turned eight this week and I felt like we had to mark the occasion with something special so I invited two human friends and their dogs over to our house for a wee puppy party. Yes, I did! It was a team effort. The youngest contributed small party hats she bought at the Village […]

How much do you pay for dog dentistry?

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: dog stuff

Guess who had a dental appointment last week? Our favourite four-legged family member, Piper: For dogs, a tooth cleaning isn’t a simple appointment involving a chatty hygenist and a lecture about the importance of flossing. It’s kind of a big deal. First of all, it’s an all-day appointment that requires bloodwork beforehand, anesthetic, IVs, and monitoring. […]

Piper’s photoshoot

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: dog stuff

A couple times a year, Masters ‘n Dogs in Westboro Village hosts a pet portrait session for charity. I spotted the ad in the latest Kitchissippi Times so I jumped at the chance to have a professional photo taken of our four-legged daughter. It took place on Saturday. As soon as we reached the door of […]

A “no trespassing” message from Piper

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Home/reno|Misc. life

Now that the snow is finally receding our gardens are once again revealing themselves. Mind you, everything is still frozen, but you can spot some green here and there amid all the brown. A couple of summers ago I buried a few locally grown strawberries in a small patch of garden that gets some afternoon […]

Instagram tips I learned from our dog

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: dog stuff|The business of blogging

Some of you already know about our dog’s Instagram account. It is a multimedia project my family and I started awhile back. I liked the idea of a family Instagram account because it involves two things I love: photography and storytelling, and I think these are skills that are worth cultivating. (Sidebar: this is an […]

  • Liz Dick: Just came across this forum now. Funny after all these years I've never seen it. Rummoli has been a family favourite of ours for four generations.

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (18) and Sarah (16). I am the managing editor of our community newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
