I hate wasting food. Last I was looking at three very spotty bananas withering on the countertop, and I asked myself, what’s a mamma to do? Answer: MAKE MUFFINS* * I do not consider myself a baker or a muffin maker. My muffin motivation was two-fold: (1) To use up the aforementioned bananas (2) to […]

Are you a preservationist?*

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food

I’ve decided to invent a new phrase: PRETTY AS A PICKLE. Do you think it’ll catch on? My parents used to preserve cherries we harvested from the trees in our backyard. The idea of canning berries and fruit and pickles and beans has always intimidated me, mostly because of the huge amount of effort involved and the fact […]

Tostadas! They’re better than tacos!

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food

I had a bit of a culinary epiphany at the grocery store the other day. I was picking up some salsa when I spied a package of tostadas. For your reference, it looked like this: They also came in jalapeno flavour (!) but I had to leave those behind. Tostadas are fried corn tortillas… essentially […]

My personal history with mushrooms. And a recipe.

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food

I had a sudden craving for mushroom soup and it couldn’t be from a can. So I made a version of this recipe today. It turned out pretty good; earthy and real, with a breath of woodland forest. If you like mushrooms I think you’ll like it too. – True story. My parents were born and raised […]

A bowl of comfort and love

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Easy ways to make kids happy|Recipes and Food

I’ve been feeling a bit like a crazy mama this week, working/writing/planning to the point of Total Brain Explosion. And then there’s the weather! Holy crap. I’ve had it up to *here* with the deep freeze. CALGON, TAKE ME AWAY. The cold has been downright paralyzing. And this kind of paralysis demands easier meals and […]

  • Jen_nifer: I love your weekend reading lists, keep them coming!
  • Glenn Allen: OK, not disturbing, just bothersome!
  • Glenn Allen: A couple of disturbing thoughts on this. Three, really. First is that GT works the "one-way, all-the way" store layout marketing strategy (like IKEA)
  • coffee with julie: I received the "secret" invite and admit to being intrigued but also feeling anxious ... what would I be getting myself into??! I immediately thought
  • andrea tomkins: Thanks for your comment Kelly. Good point about the foodie angle. I wonder... did this event do a good job of raising awareness about GT, or not? A
  • Kelly Rusk: HMMM.. Don't know how I feel about this. Particularly as someone who both works with influencers on behalf of clients and someone who has been invited
  • Misty Pratt: I cycled to Cornwall all in one day last year for the MS ride :) Totally doable! And yes to skiing being magical/therapeutic soul-food. Have I mention

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (15) and Sarah (13). I am the editor of the Kitchissippi Times, Capital Parent Newspaper, and a regular contributor to MediaSmarts.ca. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.

  • My latest post on the MediaSmarts website is up, and it's about family social media accounts. (Yes! It's a thing! And I think it's pretty neat.) Is this something you do as a family? I'd love it if you left your two cents on the topic.
