After 13 years of car camping, we’ve pretty much nailed down our daily routine. It’s almost always the same. Wake up, eat breakfast, go for a hike, eat lunch, enjoy some beach time, eat dinner, sit around the campfire, go to bed. Of course, in between those things there are camp chores that need to […]

When leftovers come together LIKE MAGIC

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food

Don’t you love it when you clean out the fridge and the resulting food comes together in one dish so beautifully you can’t help but think you ARE WINNING THE KITCHEN WARS? Well, this happened the other day, and I can’t stop thinking about it and high-fiving myself: Here’s what happened. I bought a couple […]

The other night I tweeted a plea for a new macaroni and cheese recipe. Our usual from Joy of Cooking is a household staple around here but I was in the mood for something a little different. Not TOO different, of course. The family wouldn’t tolerate the sudden inclusion of pureed squash or lentils. But […]

I hate wasting food. Last I was looking at three very spotty bananas withering on the countertop, and I asked myself, what’s a mamma to do? Answer: MAKE MUFFINS* * I do not consider myself a baker or a muffin maker. My muffin motivation was two-fold: (1) To use up the aforementioned bananas (2) to […]

Are you a preservationist?*

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food

I’ve decided to invent a new phrase: PRETTY AS A PICKLE. Do you think it’ll catch on? My parents used to preserve cherries we harvested from the trees in our backyard. The idea of canning berries and fruit and pickles and beans has always intimidated me, mostly because of the huge amount of effort involved and the fact […]

  • Lori: I made these today but had to substitute choc chips due to an unreasonable aversion to chewy fruit, she loves them.
  • andrea tomkins: Seriously! There's SO MUCH to know. You can write a book about it. In fact, I'm sure someone already has. :)
  • Claudette: Wow. I see how you're barely scratching the surface here. Riveting... I'm going to send this link to my mom now, and share it. Thank you Andrea
  • Lynn Blackburn: We have a rare black groundhog with little grey nose digging up our lawn in Cantley Qc... So there are 3 in the area... :-)
  • stacey: great stuff thanks for the info!!
  • andrea tomkins: That cup had a few drops of orange juice in it. He must have really liked it. The dishpan was a total magnet!
  • Claudette: So now the truth is out. Canadian chipmunks love Tims! lol (he was probably looking for a crumb of a timbit thinking you may have dipped it in the cup

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (17) and Sarah (15). I am the managing editor of our community newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times, and a regular contributor to MediaSmarts.ca. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.

The #dailylunches project – 1000 lunches and counting

Every day I eat lunch and take a picture. Here's the latest:

Created with flickr badge.

Click the photo for details: what it is, where I ate it (if it's worth a mention!) and how to cook it (if there happens to be a recipe). You can also read more about this project right here.
