When journalists make mistakes

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Publishing/writing/career stuff

I have been sick with a cold for most of the week and I have been dragging my sorry butt around the house in the most pathetic way. At least one member of the family feels sorry for me. She has been at my side through THICK AND THIN*: * That is, when she’s not […]

Awhile back I was at a blogging conference, in the audience, listening to a panel of speakers. I can’t even remember what the topic was about, but someone I knew from the blogging world stood up during the question and answer time and shared her exasperation about (a) not being on the receiving end of […]

When every day is a work day

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Publishing/writing/career stuff

I posted this photo to Piper’s Instagram account this morning: I don’t really hate Mondays – that was Piper talking – but it did get me thinking about how confused my work week has become these past few years. I don’t really have a work week. I don’t get up, get in a car, show […]

Watch out! I’m feeling introspective today! I was in a meeting last week, sort of a consulting thing. There were five of us around the table. We were talking about blogging, and reaching blog readers, when one of the people in the meeting turned to me and asked: “Why do you think people read YOUR blog?” […]

The editor’s letter

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Publishing/writing/career stuff

One of the things I do in my role as editor of Capital Parent Newspaper is write an editor’s letter in every issue. It can always be found in its regular spot on page two. When I first came on board two years ago it was up to me whether I wanted to include something […]

  • Bloodless: The park definitely is super-fun. I agree about the asphalt pathways - which is why we definitely wear our water shoes. The Vortex is an interesting
  • andrea tomkins: It was REALLY special. The more I think about it, the more grateful I am to have had this experience. re: the volume. Everyone was given headphones
  • Brien Marshall: Thanks for sharing that - what a way to get a visceral sense of how those airmen must have felt, minus the extra fear of not knowing if this would be

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (18) and Sarah (16). I am the managing editor of our community newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
