bedtime conversation

Posted by andrea in: Misc. life

“Mummy!”

Emma was wearing her serious face. I knew she meant business.

“Mum-meeee!” hers was a whisper-shout. “SARAH SAID THE B-WORD.”

The B-word? I racked my brain. Nope. Couldn’t really think of one.

“What B-word?”

“BAGINA!”

“Bagina?”

“Yes! BAJ-EYE-NA!”

I remembered back. Earlier in the afternoon I overheard a conversation between Sarah, Emma, and one of Emma’s schoolmates. They were in the wading pool. Sarah mentioned something about the cold pool water on her vag!na. The other girl said something in reply, but I couldn’t hear what it was.

So that was it. Obviously she had told my girls it was a bad word.

Emma looked concerned.

“First of all Emma, it’s VAG!NA and it’s a body part. It’s not a bad word. Just like “eye” or “arm” or “ear” isn’t a bad word. So don’t let someone tell you it is. Okay?”

“Okay.”

“BUT – it is a private part of your body. It’s different from your eye and your ear and your arm. Okay?”

“Okay.”

She seemed happy with that.

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our dog Piper who is kind of a big deal on Instagram. We also have two human daughters: Emma (20) and Sarah (18). During the day I work as a writer at The Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999. The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
