The Peep-tastic photo challenge

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Memes/blog awards etc|Photography

Easter will soon be upon us. I love Easter. Not for any religious reasons.  I love the candy. The colours. The imagery … bunnies and eggs and baby chicks. Oh my. It is All.So.Freakin’.Cute.

Easter is a very photogenic family holiday, and there is almost nothing as photogenic as those lovely little Peeps. Oh, you know, those dollops of yellow dye#2, corn syrup, gelatin and lord knows what else that barely look like the chicks they are supposed to ressemble? Yeah. Those. You have to admit, they make excellent photo fodder.

We eat one package of them exactly once a year. And this year, I’m going to set up a big Peeps photo shoot.

And I’m hoping you some of you will join me for a big peeps-related photosharing exTRAvaGANza. Marla? Lex? I’m looking right at you, but I also know that there are a lot of other supercreatives out there as well.

Anyway, here’s how it’ll work:

Buy Peeps. Pose them. Freeze them. Melt them. Pile them in your mouth. Take photos. Lots of photos. Be creative! Post the best photos on your blog. Make sure you let us know in the comments below. If you can, post them in your Flickr with the tag “fishbowlpeeps,” that way we can look at them all as a group.

That’s it! You have until April 7 to post your photos. (I know that Peeps have a best-before date. I’m not heartless you know. Eat them when you’re done!)

Good luck! I am looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

I am SO in!!!

I’ve never eaten, or purchased, a peep in my life. They just entered my conciousness about three or four years ago and they fascinate me.

Easter is also a fascination… what with the League of Shadow Bunnies on the loose and recruiting.

So it might just be you and me Lex, but I’m okay with that. I do love those bunny pics of yours. I remember them from last year.
p.s. what do you mean you’ve never had a peep!?

Hi there,
I don’t mean to jump-in when I know nobody, but I would LOVE to take part in this!

I was at wal-mart last night when I stumbled across the peeps. I love peeps. They are one of those things that immediately bring me back to childhood.

I grabbed a pack and then noticed “no sugar added” peeps made with splenda. I bought those as well. I plan to have the ultimate peep taste test/show-down. Of course, there will be lots of photos along the way!

Never. Had. A. Peep.

Neither has Gerry.

I have to say, even the thought of putting one of those in my mouth makes me recoil. I think it’s the colour. And the texture. And the fact they look slightly like yellow poop. I can’t be alone in seeing that. Can I?

They look like great models and toys though!

There’s always been a limit on how much candy I can eat, so why eat a peep when you can have chocolate?!? Have you seen the dark chocolate bunnies this year? 70+% cocao?? Now that’s something that goes in my mouth!

I’m in.
I too have never seen a peep.
Andrea where do you come up with this stuff gurl?
Watchout peep lovers cuz creative gurl here is going to get all witchy on her peeps! ha! :)

Thanks Natalie! I thought Peeps were widely known, and everywhere… tho’ I proved myself wrong on that point yesterday. I went to the big Superstore and there were none to be found. Perhaps there is a worldwide Peeps shortage going on that we don’t know about?

March 27th, 2007 at 12:02 pm

Of course I’ll join it – I just need to buy some Peeps. Also – have you tried them a little bit stale? I like them best a little bit stale. It does something for the texture.

Good lord if anyone followed this convo they would think we were really whacked kids.

Let’s get us some peeps!
Where do I go???

Come here little peep peep – sorry couldn’t resist ;)

March 27th, 2007 at 1:05 pm

I have eaten stale Peeps out of desperation.

I may be giving away the end of my photoshoot, but I think at the end of this I’m going to make a big batch of Rice-Krispy Peep Squares.

Natalie: I’ve been to the Superstore and just recently at the Pharmasave. Neither store had Peeps in stock. It’s official. I’m on a mission.

March 27th, 2007 at 1:06 pm

Lex: In previous years I’ve seen purple Peeps. Would that reduce or increase the yuck factor for you? :)

What is it with the word peep that makes me smile and laugh???
OK I am going to be a freaky waldo shopper on the hunt for peeps – pretty colored peeps.

peep peep peep – hee :)

Peep alert – there are peeps at the dollar stores here in TO. They are faded, pathetic looking versions, but peeps none the less. Perhaps they are poser-peeps from the burbs.

March 29th, 2007 at 7:30 am

So I finally found my Peeps. I was at Carlingwood last night. They did not have them at the pharmacy. And then I remembered Lex’s comment and we checked the dollar store. Score! I bought five packages. And then we went to go to Loblaws. They were there too, and believe it or not they were cheaper there than at the dollar store. *sigh* I bought a couple more packages, including one of purple Peeps.

Much to my children’s dismay, the photo shoot probably won’t be happening until the weekend.

I picked up peeps round one – 15 peeps for $1.99.

Actually 15 peeps for $1.59 because I got a 40cent SENIOR’S DISCOUNT. I’m reeling.

Who knew a little gray would age you 23 years!

I will pick up Peeps at Tar-jhay tonight. Fun!

I have to say, people look at you weird if you walk down Yonge Street holding a package of peeps.

And people smile if they see you photographing peeps in the park. I’ve taken to handing them out to anyone I see with a camera who expresses amusement.

I will go to the store and see what peeps out from the candy shelves (sorry, couldn’t resist.)

alimum – I think most people are going to be using different colours of chicks. But if you have bunnies (do they make anything in addition to the chicks and bunnies?) I say BRING IT ON!

karrie: I haven’t created a group. I thought about it, but then I realized there already is one for Peeps … I might upload some of my best shots there too.

Lex: Not a fan huh? Well, neither am I. In fact I’m wondering if the Peeps would make good s’mores. Hmmm. If I had an open fire that would make a good photo op.

I had way too much fun with this!!

Originally I was going to do a “Peep Show”, but I thought I’d better keep it clean for family viewing!

My Flickr account hasn’t been reviewed either, so the photos may take a few days to come up in the pool.

You can see them here:

I stumbled across this site and wanted to join in the peep fun. My Flickr account still hasn’t passed review, so please take a look at my peeps @ http://www.flickr.com/photos/l_stegall. I’ve tagged my photos with fish bowl peeps, but I don’t know if they will be searchable by the deadline. Anyway….lots of fun to create.

I, too, have joined in the fun. I’m put to shame by the creativity of so many other folks, but enjoy!

My flickr is also new, so my shots won’t show up in searches for a couple weeks. You can try:

I still haven’t been reviewed by Flickr, but eventually, mine will show up with the tag words. They are still a set on my Flickr account, though. Nevertheless, they were lots of fun to create. I do have lots of leftover peeps, since I can’t imagine actually eating one. So, I’m trying to find a creative way to recycle the little buggers…..

Thanks for letting me join in. I’ll pop in to your blog from time to time.

[…] Anyway if you are a lover of Peeps like myself check out a peek inside a fishbowl. They are having a Peep-tastic Photo Challenge. On this blog, Andrea challenges all the Peep lovers to pose, freeze, melt, stuff in your mouth and basically do anything with them and take as many pics as you can and send them to her so she can post them. Then she, along with some others, will judge and pick the best. This challenge ends on April 7th. Have fun!
