Fit-in 15: the summary

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Yaktivism

This has been an interesting experience for me and I’m really glad I participated.

(If you’re not sure what I’m talking about, here’s the original post (with all the entries too).

FYI, I’ve kept track of my daily 15 on a page over here.

At first I wasn’t entirely convinced that fifteen minutes was going to make a difference, or how easily I could incorporate it into my day. I already find it hard to schedule time at the gym. But then, doing the gym thing involves a whole process that is very time consuming. It’s time I don’t often have available to me. I have to get dressed for the gym, walk to the gym, sweat my face off at the gym for an hour or so, walk home, shower, etc. Phew.

Fifteen, on the other hand, is manageable. More often than not, 15 means I’m not changing into gym clothes or taking a large chunk out of my day … it’s simply adding a few minutes onto something I’m already doing. It’s realistic. And easy! (That’s the best part!)

For me, this challenge has not been about weight loss, but I know that’s the goal for some. I’ve been there – trust me! I can tell you from personal experience that the hardest thing about embarking on a journey to good health is taking those first steps and not losing heart. If the first steps aren’t small ones you won’t make it very far.

Fit-in 15 is about making yourself a priority and creating new habits that are cheap and easy, and building on something you’re already doing to get you on that road to good health. That daily 15 can be something as simple as parking the car a little further away at the grocery store, biking to work and taking the stairs (this is something Mark’s doing!), taking the dog out for a walk in the morning instead of letting him out the back door, or walking the kids to school or bus stop.

Walking is probably the easiest thing to incorporate. It’s how I lost all my baby weight with kid#2. When I’m walking I’m not just getting my blood pumping, I’m seeing my environment a little differently and clearing my head and decompressing. It does wonders for my twitchy stress levels. I’d forgotten how good it makes me feel and I’m glad this challenge reminded me.

Anyway, I want to know, how did you do with your Fit-in 15? Was it easy, or was it hard? And more importantly, did it inspire you enough to keep going?

It was a good reminder of how easy 15 minutes really is and the extra inspiration to take my usual walks and ratchet them up to a higher level where they’d count as exercise. Worked so well that I was asked to “slow down” by DH when walking boys to school together. ;)

It also gave me an opportunity to reacquaint myself with balance ball sit-ups, which are really effective and really hard (for me, anyway).

I’m going to keep it up and try to update it on my blog from time to time. The scariest part was actually taking my personal measurements — having #s to compare to is terrifying. ;)

I found this a mix of easy and hard – like I said originally, I’m fairly active throughout the week, so it wasn’t difficult to toss in an extra activity on the odd day off that I have from my sports. I tend to be the definition of lethargy on the weekends since my weekdays are so full, though, so it took some definite self-prodding to get going. It felt good, though, once I set my mind to it and did it.

I’m definitely going to try and keep this up for the weekends. The biggest test will come this Friday night. I have no hockey scheduled, so it will be VERY tempting to just plop on the couch, I’m sure. But I’m going to try and commit to this for a bit longer, at least.

(And for the record: hockey, 30 Day Shred video, hockey, shred, shred, hockey & shred, and last night I did a new video, the Biggest Loser Cardio Max)

Mine shook out as a 3km run with the Running Room (I joined an Advanced 5k clinic), a 4km run on my own, a 7km run (part of the Gateway to 8k program), the 30-Day Shred.

The running would’ve taken place regardless, so that was easy, but I credit the Fit-in 15 with getting me to walk with my husband. I normally find walking terribly boring, and I’ve always sort of turned up my nose at pointless walks around the neighbourhood. This gave me a reason to get out there anyway, and suddenly I see the value of going out in the evenings and having some quiet time together. The walks gave us time to talk, to reconnect, and to get away from the more hectic parts of our days.

My husband is recovering from a back problem and his activity level is limited to walking, so another happy bonus of our walks was that I felt like I was working on HIS fitness and health as well as mine. He’s been really sad to miss out on the active lifestyle I’m enjoying (he’d love to run with me, but he can’t), and this was the first time in a LONG time that we’ve been able to spend time together being active instead of bumming around the house. It felt great, and I’m eager to keep it up.

I liked the idea of doing 15 mins. It took the pressure off having to do longer. Not that I don’t want to do longer, and I often did, but at least I knew that if I got 15 in I was doing okay. Before I would chastise myself if I didn’t get a full 30 mins.

Last night I rode my bike along with my running buddy and it was so awesome. I have missed running with her, not just for the exercise but the conversation. Last night was great. We did 5K and I plan on going out with her every run (3 times a week!)

I enjoyed doing the fit 15- and it was nice to remind myself to take a jaunt around the neighborhood every day.

The thing that I found hard was getting the time to blog about it, lol! :) This week something had to give, and it was blogging.

Since I have all summer off, it’s a nice way to kick start a walking program that I can continue every day. Thanks!

Thanks for the challenge, I’ve really enjoyed it!

While generally not a week goes by where I don’t fit in a few days of more challenging exercise (core ball class, nice long hike at the cottage, good length jog in the evening), the fit in 15 has been great for the days between “the bigger days”.

It’s meant getting out for short hikes at lunch, or pushing myself off the couch when feeling sluggish to do just a little something. It’s meant getting out at enjoying a little sunshine and fitness EVERYDAY… and it’s been great :)

I took it as a challenge to fit in an extra 15 with the kids when I could. We danced, we swam (ran circles in our pool), we biked or rode in the backpack, we did the stairs. It was a great way to get everybody up and doing something for at least 15 minutes. It usually led to a half an hour, but that is what it is all about. I will certainly keep trying to add in the extra 15 with the kids all summer long.

It was a great starting point!

Here’s my week, at a glance: walking to/from work, herding cats at Upper Canada Village for 7 hours, walking from home to kids’ school (this is 3×15, incidentally), lots more walking, more walking, and yet more walking. And some walking.

Did it inspire me to keep going? You betcha! I feel better when I walk places, even if it takes me a bit longer to get there. And walking has also helped me remember to apply sunscreen before leaving the house, instead of just taking it with me with the intention of putting it on later. Third, less money spent on public transit, and less reliance on fossil fuels. Finally, modeling good habits for my kids, and spending outside time with them, to boot. Wins all around!

Like others, I found that the 15 mins usually turned into 30+. It made me realize how easy it really is to find time for fitness. Great challenge. I didn’t blog about it (yet) but did tweet.

For myself, in the past I felt that if I was not able to get 30 plus minutes then there was no point and would not make the effort. This week made me realize 15 minutes is something and better then nothing. Thanks for the challenge. I am definitely going to try and keep it up.

Absolutely. I already bike to and from work, so I get about 45 minutes of biking everyday anyway, so this week I really tried to step things up and go a bit beyond my normal exercise. My husband and I play co-ed ultimate together, I made sure to do two weight lifting sessions and one core class, and to top it off, my husband and I popped toddler on the bike on the weekend and ran all our errands without having to get in the car. I also threw in an extra couple of runs in the evenings this week as I noticed our dog was getting chunky now that I do most of my runs/workouts at work at lunch. This was tough because I actually prefer walking around my neighbourhood on summer nights. With my dog I feel safe, and I download audiobooks and CBC podcasts that keep me busy and from getting bored. Sometimes I walk further just to hear the end of a podcast!

I’m “training” for a short trialthlon now so I have really had to step up my exercise – this is more a challenge for me as I have to squeeze in enough practice in all three sports on top of full time work and my regular mom duties. I’m exhausted just thinking about it. Not sure how some people do it so seamlessly! It sure does take a lot of planning and a very supportive partner.

I really enjoyed the fit 15 challenge. What I noticed, is that it actually motivated me to do more. Not for weight loss, but to find different ways to exercise, with out going to the gym. A quick walk a lunch, gardening, hiking.. I found new things to try, since I only had to do 15min of it.

I agree with what most people said, 15min is more manageable than committing time to go to the gym. I really took the pressure off.
