I’ve often said that if you want kids to enjoy hiking, it’s a good idea to offer incentives. (Hopefully, they aren’t incentives that involve mobile devices, as per my wee rant in this previous post.) For us, the payoff of a great view is a big one. Or, as Misty commented, a special snack is […]

Part way through our stay at Bon Echo we rented kayaks and went for an explorational paddle. We usually rent a canoe while we’re camping at other sites but Bon Echo is the best provincial park to do it, especially for beginners. Kayak and canoe rental is pretty easy here. Just drop by the area […]

Camping at Bon Echo, Cliff Top Trail

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: parenting|travel talk

Everything was soaked on Monday morning, which was not a surprise given the rain storm we had the night before. We had planned to hike the Bon Echo Creek trail but once we got there we realized it was way too muddy and impassable in parts. (Note to self: make sure all family members have […]

Camping at Bon Echo Provincial Park, part 1

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: travel talk

We arrived later than we had intended on Sunday, but that turned out to be a blessing in disguise. It meant that we only waited 30 minutes for the rain to stop instead of 60+. I love camping, but bad weather – especially given the amount of rain we’ve had these few couple of months – […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our dog Piper who is kind of a big deal on Instagram. We also have two human offspring: Emma (23) and Sarah (21). During the day I work as a writer at The Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999. The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
