About that reusable container program at Bulk Barn

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Yaktivism

I had the chance to try out the new reusable container program at Bulk Barn this past weekend. I first heard about it about a month ago. The cashier popped a flyer about it in my bag and I was intrigued, for a few reasons: 1) We use an awful lot of plastic when we […]

Thinking about cars on Earth Day

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Yaktivism

The other night we watched a really interesting episode of Cosmos. (Have you watched this show? I just realized you can catch it online here.) It was episode seven, which was about a fellow named Clair Patterson, who took on the task of figuring out the age of the earth. During this process he had to invent the ultra “clean […]

A waterless car wash? Yes, it can be done!

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Oh! Things!

Awhile back I received an email from Canadian Tire about the goclean waterless car wash, asking me if I wanted to try out a sample. I am often on the lookout for useful/new/cool things for my editor’s faves column in Capital Parent Newspaper, and this seemed like a good candidate. (I’d also seen goclean on […]

We are a little bit compost crazy here at Casa Fishbowl. We have a city-issued green bin, a backyard composter (it’s big and black with two hinged flaps on top) as well as two big “cages” for leaf compost in the back corner of our lot. We’ve been using the big green bin all winter […]

They have two locations in Ottawa – Pinecrest near the Ikea and Wellington West – and have an online store as well. Have you been? If not, there is no better […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our dog Piper who is kind of a big deal on Instagram. We also have two human daughters: Emma (20) and Sarah (18). During the day I work as a writer at The Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999. The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
