Although the temperatures haven’t indicated that Spring is on its way, the sun sure has. The days are longer and brighter and all of this sunshine is making me happy. And also, a little squirrely. Suddenly I have the urge to reorganize the freezer, air out the pillows, and generally give everything A Good Deep […]

More green stuff in the garden

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Oh! Things!

This is how I cut the grass: … at least within the confines of this one brick. :) It makes me happy, to watch things grow. Share the post “More green stuff in the garden” FacebookTwitterGoogle+PinterestLinkedInE-mailReddit

Thinking about cars on Earth Day

The other night we watched a really interesting episode of Cosmos. (Have you watched this show? I just realized you can catch it online here.) It was episode seven, which was about a fellow named Clair Patterson, who took on the task of figuring out the age of the earth. During this process he had to invent the ultra “clean […]

We are a little bit compost crazy here at Casa Fishbowl. We have a city-issued green bin, a backyard composter (it’s big and black with two hinged flaps on top) as well as two big “cages” for leaf compost in the back corner of our lot. We’ve been using the big green bin all winter […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (18) and Sarah (16). I am the managing editor of our community newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
