Growing rosemary

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Home/reno|Oh! Things!

Sometimes the smallest projects are the most satisfying, aren’t they? Back in the fall I decided I needed a supply of rosemary over the winter. So I grabbed a spade and dug out the rosemary shrub in our garden, dumped it in a pot, and brought it inside. Amazingly, it survived. (I don’t have very […]

I’m prepping my composter for spring, are you?

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Home/reno

I’ve written quite a bit about composting before. I am a serious composting nerd. I honestly can’t help myself. I just love it. We use our city-issued green bin quite a bit but I love our backyard compostor just as much. Why? Because veggie scraps and leaves = gorgeous garden soil that is free. FREE […]

The life cycle of a terrarium filled with moss

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Oh! Things!

Two of the interesting things that grew in the moss terrarium I made… and neither of them are actually moss.

I am so glad my daughters aren’t the kind of girls who are afraid to do this: I have to thank my husband for introducing them to these interesting little creatures. The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (18) and Sarah (16). I am the managing editor of our community newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
