Have you ever made anything using za’atar? I picked up a package at the Ottawa Fair Trade Festival the other day. It’s a savoury middle eastern blend of herbs and spices. It can be incorporated into almost anything (think: marinades, eggs, flat bread, salad dressings) but I thought I’d start with something super easy, such as […]

We have a winner! The email has been sent and the name posted in the last comment. Thanks all for your entries, stories, and confessions. :) When our daughters were very young I made a concerted effort never to appear squeamish or grossed out by any spider, snail, or snake that we’d come across during […]

Thanks for your entries! We have a winner! The winner has been emailed and the name is listed in the last comment.  One of my favourite things to do in the afternoons when I’m in need of a pick-me-up is walk down to Bridgehead, grab a coffee, and walk along Richmond Road. I always feel so energized […]

WE HAVE A WINNNNERRRRR! Was it you? Check the comments. :) Saunders Farm, a longtime Fishbowl patron, hit a very cool milestone this past weekend. Now in its 24th year, Saunders Farm welcomes over 50,000 guests each October for its Haunting Season and Fright Fest. But that’s not the big news. The millionth visitor came […]

We have a winner! Thanks for your entries everyone! I know there are a lot of community-minded folks who are on committees for parks and playgrounds and other community spaces. What if I told you that there is $50,000 grant for use towards a community project with your city’s name on it, just waiting to be […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (16) and Sarah (14). I am the managing editor of our community newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times, and a regular contributor to MediaSmarts.ca. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.

If you'd like to contact me, please use this form. If you're so inclined, you can read more about me here. Thank you for visiting!

Every day I eat lunch and take a picture. Here's the latest:

Created with flickr badge.

Click the photo for details: what it is, where I ate it (if it's worth a mention!) and how to cook it (if there happens to be a recipe). You can also read more about this project right here.
