Are you a preservationist?*

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food

I’ve decided to invent a new phrase: PRETTY AS A PICKLE. Do you think it’ll catch on? My parents used to preserve cherries we harvested from the trees in our backyard. The idea of canning berries and fruit and pickles and beans has always intimidated me, mostly because of the huge amount of effort involved and the fact […]

I can’t stop eating this chickpea salad

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food

This was today’s Daily Lunches dish and I wanted to share it here because it was The Perfect Lunch. The original recipe came from here, but I made a few small changes. I cut the whole recipe in half. It still made plenty! I added some finely diced red onion in place of the green […]

The youngest made cookies today! It’s a great little recipe actually, one that she nabbed right off the back of our jar of Kraft peanut butter: I used to scoff at this recipe, but it actually works… and it’s the fastest recipe in the history of cookie making! All you need is: 1 cup of […]

Lunch #599 – Spinach and strawberry salad

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food

I’m one lunch away from 600 lunches! I wanted to post number 599 here because it involves a salad dressing that is too good not to share. It only take a couple of minutes to make, and beats the bottled stuff by a mile. This one is great on spinach and strawberries. You can add some […]

  • lacoop: I'm with the "canoe" crowd. You can rent at Algonquin Park. Simply the best way to get away from the yahoos.
  • Lynn: Noooooot making me overcome my fear of camping any time soon :). Hope the tale of the trail search has a happy ending!
  • Susan: I recommend Frontenac (Provincial Park 2/3s the way to Kingston from Ottawa). There are hike in sites, canoe in sites and no car camping. There is a c
  • Greg: An alternative is camping off-season. Once schools are in session you lose most of the families with kids during the week. The folks who want to sit a
  • Misty Pratt: oh, and get a radio-free site!! It helps not to have music blaring, although it doesn't take care of arguments about socks :)
  • Misty Pratt: yup, agree with the other comments about the canoe. You're only going to get peace and quiet if you canoe or hike in somewhere, and I find hiking kind

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (15) and Sarah (13). I am the editor of the Kitchissippi Times, Capital Parent Newspaper, and a regular contributor to MediaSmarts.ca. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.

Every day I eat lunch and take a picture. Here's a recent one:
