I haven’t written up a “will they eat it” post for awhile now. I was poking around my recipe archive and remembered how fun it was so I thought I’d revisit when I could. I found a new recipe to add to my repertoire. It’s fast and flavourful and made a pretty good lunch the next […]

Have you ever made your own English muffins?

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: - iKnead|Recipes and Food

Do you make your own pancakes? Muffins? What about waffles? What about ENGLISH MUFFINS? I saw this “how to” recipe over at thekitchn.com and thought I’d give it a spin this past weekend, you know, just so we can say we tried making a new breakfast carb. In the end, the recipe the worked out […]

Pizza stones and a small pizza-related revelation

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food

As some of you already know, I’m a big fan of making my own pizza dough. I use this recipe. It can easily be made by hand but it’s suuuuper quick with the help of a stand mixer. I usually make two batches and freeze the extra one (sometimes I cut it in two to […]

Ages ago I bookmarked a post on the Ottawa Mommy Club website aptly named: Canadian Fried Dough Pastry. I’m assuming it’s called this because it’s not associated in any way with BEAVERTAILS®, which is a registered trademark. If you’ve never experienced this delicious treat, you are seriously missing out. This hot, deep-fried, sweet pastry is […]

Back to lunch

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food

I was going to throw in the towel on my Daily Lunches project on January 1. My meals were a little bit sad and I really didn’t have the energy to pull it together. I really wasn’t feeling it anymore. I was boring myself. I was in Total Lunchtime Limbo for a while but I […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (18) and Sarah (16). I am the managing editor of our community newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.

If you'd like to contact me, please use this form. If you're so inclined, you can read more about me here. Thank you for visiting!
