A very Ottawa weekend to cap off summer holidays

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Ottawa

The girls are back at school today and I am happy to return to regular routines again. I love this time of year. Love it. I always feel like September is a chance to start again with a blank slate – refreshed, reinvigorated – ready to tackle the challenges that lie ahead. I am just […]

The view from Champlain Lookout

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Easy ways to make kids happy|Ottawa

On the way home from our trip to see the old ruins we decided to check out another famous landmark in Gatineau Park, the Champlain Lookout. Have you ever been? It’s a must-see if you ever find yourself in the area, as it affords us ordinary mortals a rare bird’s-eye view of a particularly pretty slice […]

The first time, and last time, I visited the ruins of the old mill in Gatineau Park was sometime in the mid-90s. Back then it was still mostly a secret, and not a place that families would necessarily venture out and explore. I’m happy to report that this area has become a lot more mainstream and […]

We decided to check out a new trail this weekend, another one in the Stony Swamp network of trails near Bell’s Corners. I’m glad we went, because this trail is another keeper. See how happy it made us? It’s a short trail. If I had to guess I’d say it clocks in at around 2.5 […]

Birdfeeder revisited

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Oh! Things!

I know I’ve written about this before, but I had to say YET AGAIN how awesome this little bird feeder has been. Truly, it has been the gift that keeps on giving. (Click to enlarge the photo. It’s Mrs. Cardinal! She’s a regular.) I think this cold snap has been tough on the poor little […]

  • Ginny: I like the reusable fabric snack bags. Perfect for dry things like crackers, that I might normally put in a plastic bag.
  • Sarah: Those Lunchbots divided stainless steel containers are pretty cool. It would help me break out of the sandwich, fruit, snack rut.
  • Allison D: I like to try to 2 Go dressing containers: http://www.terra20.com/klipit-dressing-to-go Regular containers always leak and you can't put dressing o
  • Erika H: I've never shopped at Terra20 but found so many cute things I would be interested in! I love the idea of the reusable snack bags instead of using
  • andrea tomkins: Chocolate chips make a great addition! Glad this recipe worked out for your family! :)
  • Lori: I made these today but had to substitute choc chips due to an unreasonable aversion to chewy fruit, she loves them.
  • andrea tomkins: Seriously! There's SO MUCH to know. You can write a book about it. In fact, I'm sure someone already has. :)

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (17) and Sarah (15). I am the managing editor of our community newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times, and a regular contributor to MediaSmarts.ca. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.

The #dailylunches project – 1000 lunches and counting

Every day I eat lunch and take a picture. Here's the latest:

Created with flickr badge.

Click the photo for details: what it is, where I ate it (if it's worth a mention!) and how to cook it (if there happens to be a recipe). You can also read more about this project right here.
