Way back when the kids were Very Small we had to make some big decisions. Cloth or disposable? Co-sleeping or crib? Playmobil or Lego? Downhill or cross country? ;) I felt very strongly that the family who is sporty together, stays together. I pictured our little family on our bikes in the summer, hiking, and […]

About that turkey dinner

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food

I wanted to take a moment to address this tweet of mine in greater detail because it seemed to generate a bit of excitement out there. HOLY MOLY. The @FarmBoy turkey dinner comes in a huuuuge box. It filled up the trunk of our car. Piper finds it all very interesting! pic.twitter.com/6qlsTasqeW — andrea tomkins (@missfish) […]

FOOD. Is it the best Christmas gift?

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Oh! Things!

I have a very long story to share in the New Year about a special challenge my family has undertaken this past year. For now, I will say this: Mark and I aren’t exchanging Christmas gifts this year and we have laid out some criteria as it pertains to our stockings. The criteria is this: […]

On Saturday night we dropped by Ikea to pick up our Christmas tree. We’ve been coming here for the past 10 years or so. Their live trees are a good price  – only $20 – and proceeds go to the local Lion’s Club. It’s worth mentioning that buying your tree at Ikea also gets you […]

A view of this past week

I’m taking a wee break from the web this week, mostly in an effort to recharge my batteries for creative projects to come in 2016. The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (18) and Sarah (16). I am the managing editor of our community newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
