Sometimes the best little adventures are ones that happen when you divert from the original game plan. This is what happened when we went to Sandbanks a few weeks ago and decided to explore a new trail instead of just hanging out on the beach all day. It happened when we left our hotel without a […]

A visit to Monkey Land

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: travel talk

A good friend was asking me for resort recommendations and I realized I wrote two posts about our 2015 trip to Punta Cana and totally forgot to write about one of the best – and worst – excursions we’ve ever experienced. As I’ve mentioned before, my idea of a great family holiday includes time for quiet […]

Camping at Achray, part three (a bit about the trails)

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: travel talk

Going camping at Achray? You may want to read part one and two. I like to write about our travel and camping adventures, but to be honest, I’m never sure how to approach it here on the blog. I want to write it all down for myself, for my own family, but I also want […]

Dinner at Wooden Heads, Kingston

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food|travel talk

I have so much to catch up on here and I feel like I am falling behind by leaps and bounds, but I have to stop the presses and tell you about a great restaurant in Kingston that knocked our socks off recently: Wooden Heads Gourmet Pizza. Have you ever been? They’re a fixture in Kingston […]

Camping at Achray, Algonquin Park part 1

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: travel talk

We’ve been camping every summer since the girls were toddlers. I was REALLY looking forward to going this year, more so than usual. Maybe it’s work stress or too much time in front of the computer, or that long winter we had, but I couldn’t wait to pack up and skip town. When I think about […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (16) and Sarah (14). I am the managing editor of our community newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times, and a regular contributor to MediaSmarts.ca. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.

If you'd like to contact me, please use this form. If you're so inclined, you can read more about me here. Thank you for visiting!

The #dailylunches project – 1000 lunches and counting

Every day I eat lunch and take a picture. Here's the latest:

Created with flickr badge.

Click the photo for details: what it is, where I ate it (if it's worth a mention!) and how to cook it (if there happens to be a recipe). You can also read more about this project right here.
