I’ve made this recipe for “sushi salad” I found on the Canadian Family website a few times. I think I need to start making it every week: Sidebar: I’ve been craving sushi for the last couple of weeks. I’ve been by the Naked Fish Sushi place in Westboro THREE TIMES, only to find a “sorry […]

I was out of town yesterday and as soon as I set out I realized I was setting myself up for a potential failure. You see, although I had packed a lunch I was unprepared to face one of my big road trip habits: a stop at Tim Horton’s for coffee and a big meaty breakfast […]

It’s been awhile since I felt like I was dragging my weary bones out of bed. I woke up feeling pretty awesome today. There could be a number of reasons why: (1) the sun was shining (2) there are more fruits and veggies in my diet, and no meat (3) I got a decent night’s […]

My summer cycling resolution

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Misc. life

For the past few years I’ve been trying to challenge myself on my birthday in some way: via terrifying roller coasters and arduous hikes. In my book, there is no better way to celebrate another year of living than by pushing one’s boundaries. This is why I decided that I wanted to bike to Carleton Place with […]

About happiness and self-improvement

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Misc. life

I know what you’re thinking. OH GOD. Not another post about New Year’s/Happiness/Resolutions. I know. There’s a lot of this stuff floating around out there but I can’t help myself. It’s something I’ve been thinking a lot lately because I’ve been taking steps to get my life in order. Funny, as I write that I […]

The human body never ceases to amaze me. If you repeat the tiniest of physical actions, you will get better at them. Take for example, brushing your teeth with your left hand. If you’re right-handed, and you try it with your left, you’ll find it really awkward at first but the more do you it, […]

  • Ana Mills: I've never had a photo shoot with my husband and 15mo baby girl. Would be nice to win one for the first time.
  • carey: Our last family photo session was last summer with Sara. Would love to capture some more beautiful moments.
  • Heather: We are a family of two, and our last family portrait was done when my daughter was 18 months, so that puts it over 5 years! All our pictures are of ju
  • HollyStar: We had fabulous prenatal & newborn shoots done & that "baby" starts JK in September. So almost four years ago. Love the beach theme!

  • marnada: Our last family portrait was 2 or 3 years ago, and Sara did them. They are wonderful but the kids have changed so much since then!

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (15) and Sarah (13). I am the editor of the Kitchissippi Times and a regular contributor to MediaSmarts.ca. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.

The #dailylunches project – 1000 lunches and counting

Every day I eat lunch and take a picture. Here's the latest:

Created with flickr badge.

Click the photo for details: what it is, where I ate it (if it's worth a mention!) and how to cook it (if there happens to be a recipe). You can also read more about this project right here.
