About happiness and self-improvement

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Misc. life

I know what you’re thinking. OH GOD. Not another post about New Year’s/Happiness/Resolutions. I know. There’s a lot of this stuff floating around out there but I can’t help myself. It’s something I’ve been thinking a lot lately because I’ve been taking steps to get my life in order. Funny, as I write that I […]

The human body never ceases to amaze me. If you repeat the tiniest of physical actions, you will get better at them. Take for example, brushing your teeth with your left hand. If you’re right-handed, and you try it with your left, you’ll find it really awkward at first but the more do you it, […]

Tacos. Why do they have to be so meaty all the time?

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food

Awhile back I had an hamburger-related epiphany. I asked myself, self, do you like hamburgers or not? I decided I liked sharing a great dinner with friends and family. And I liked the act of eating a burger: something hot and delicious that doesn’t need a knife and fork. I liked the toppings too. But when […]

Drooling as I type

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: - Meals under 400 calories|Recipes and Food

Looking for a new recipe to try? This one is a keeper, and I’m actually looking forward to the leftovers! This is a Thai Tofu Quinoa Bowl from Chatelaine. You can grab the recipe right here. I used slightly less quinoa, and I didn’t have quite enough ginger, but WHOA nelly… is it ever good. It’s […]

I can’t stop eating this chickpea salad

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food

This was today’s Daily Lunches dish and I wanted to share it here because it was The Perfect Lunch. The original recipe came from here, but I made a few small changes. I cut the whole recipe in half. It still made plenty! I added some finely diced red onion in place of the green […]

A FitBit update!

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Oh! Things!|Yaktivism

This morning I put on a pair of jeans that I haven’t worn for about a year. Not only did I find five bucks in the pocket (SCORE), but they actually fit. And by “fit” I mean that I didn’t have to lie down on the bed, suck in my gut, and fight to do […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (15) and Sarah (13). I am the editor of the Kitchissippi Times and a regular contributor to MediaSmarts.ca. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.

If you'd like to contact me, please use this form. If you're so inclined, you can read more about me here. Thank you for visiting!

The #dailylunches project – 1000 lunches and counting

Every day I eat lunch and take a picture. Here's the latest:

Created with flickr badge.

Click the photo for details: what it is, where I ate it (if it's worth a mention!) and how to cook it (if there happens to be a recipe). You can also read more about this project right here.

  • My latest post on the MediaSmarts website is up, and it's about family social media accounts. (Yes! It's a thing! And I think it's pretty neat.) Is this something you do as a family? I'd love it if you left your two cents on the topic.
