On Saturday night we dropped by Ikea to pick up our Christmas tree. We’ve been coming here for the past 10 years or so. Their live trees are a good price  – only $20 – and proceeds go to the local Lion’s Club. It’s worth mentioning that buying your tree at Ikea also gets you […]

A view of this past week

I’m taking a wee break from the web this week, mostly in an effort to recharge my batteries for creative projects to come in 2016. I’ll be writing more about that later, but in the meantime, this is what it looked like this week at Casa Fishbowl. Weather-wise it was a pretty strange Christmas this […]

Last minute gift ideas for tweens and teens

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Oh! Things!

A Fishbowl reader was looking for last-minute gift ideas for tweens and teens this week. I pointed her to this past post, but I wanted to add a few of my personal faves here too: Texting gloves so they can text without their fingers freezing (Here’s a pair from MEC.) Blanket scarves – apparently it’s cool to bundle […]

Annnd that’s a wrap. On Christmas, that is.

Christmas is weird. You spend weeks, possibly months, thinking and planning and shopping and list-making … and then the day arrives. And then it’s over. And then it’s Back To Normal But Not Really Because the Holidays Are Still Kinda Happening. Mark’s parents came over for dinner on Christmas Eve. The girls set the table […]

I’m not a cookie baker. I’m a cookie EATER, but I’m not a cookie baker. So it goes without saying that every Christmas I feel like a failure in the cookie department. I just can’t motivate myself to mix together butter and sugar and crank out something that looks and tastes amazing. (Honestly, I prefer […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark. We have two daughters: Emma (19) and Sarah (17). I am the managing editor of our community newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
