We are a little bit compost crazy here at Casa Fishbowl. We have a city-issued green bin, a backyard composter (it’s big and black with two hinged flaps on top) as well as two big “cages” for leaf compost in the back corner of our lot. We’ve been using the big green bin all winter […]

A bit about garbage collection in Ottawa and our Kitchen Cone. (Our secret to kitchen composting success!)

So the City of Ottawa has increased the number and type of plastics we can throw in our blue bins. Hooray! Garbage reduction excites me. What can I say, I am an eco nerd! A long time ago I posted about composting and the green bin. I would like to take a moment to make some […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our two daughters Emma (18) and Sarah (16). I am the managing editor of our community newspaper, the Kitchissippi Times. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger, and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999... which makes me either a total dinosaur or a veteran, I'm not sure which! The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
