An ordinary super hero

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Misc. life

This weekend was probably one of the busiest on record. It was wall-to-wall. And it’s still not over. Halloween is tonight.

Saturday, we went to a family Halloween party. The children were happy to wear their costumes, more than that, they were thrilled going to a party where there was going to be fun and frolic and food. The parents were invited to dress too, but I don?t have anything in the way of costumes anymore.

The pants I wore to this party three years ago don’t fit me anymore, and the other costume from the heyday of my youth certainly doesn’t either.

So that left me with a red cape. So I wore it with regular clothes underneath and a pair of red sneakers. If anyone asked, I told them I wasn’t wearing a costume.

“These are my normal everyday clothes – don’t you know ? I’m SUPER MOM!”

On the way to the party we stopped at the bakery to pick up some baguettes to go with the shredded brain I made. Mark parked. I leaped out of the car and ran up the sidewalk, cape billowing out behind me. The crowds parted without missing a beat. I felt like I could dodge bullets and leap over buildings.

I swept into the store with bravado. “Two baguettes please!”

The baker was amused. “Where are the kids?” he asked.

I wondered why he was asking when it was clear I was SUPER MOM and I was not wearing a costume.

“The princess and the lion are in the car with their zombie,” I said. “He’s driving.”

With baked goods in hand, I bounded back to the car. That cape made me feel great, like I had eaten a really fresh cruller on top of 25 cans of Red Bull and the whole electric mixture was surging through my veins and flooding my limbs and brain. In other words, I felt INVINCIBLE.

I think I’m going to have to start wearing that thing more often. Would that look weird? :)
