Yesterday I took myself over to the new SJAM winter trail for a quick ski. It was my first time ever, even though it is embarrassingly close to where we live.
I was walking down towards Westboro Beach when I encountered a lady making her way up to the parking lot. How was the trail, I asked. Oh, she said. It’s a little icy, and fast, if you like that kind of thing. But it’s a sunny day, so it’s all good.
She was right. It was a little icy, but I liked that kind of thing. When I got to the Champlain Bridge the wind was blowing so cold and hard in my face that I had to turn back.
I stopped a dozen times to take in the sights, give a couple of internal HALLELUJAHs, and catch my breath.
I saw a flock of robins (!), plenty of squirrels, abandoned birds nests, and lots of tracks in the snow. It was heavenly. How lucky are we to have a winter trail like this so close to home? (Note that it’s groomed for skiing, snowshoeing, walking, and biking!)
When I was coming back I encountered a different lady. How’s the trail, she asked.
Oh, I said. It’s icy, and a bit fast. But it’s sunny, so it’s all good.
