things we are celebrating

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Misc. life

Everything is different now, and birthdays are no exception.

The youngest turned 19 on April 11. 19! I can hardly believe it myself.

For the record, here’s the post I wrote when she was born. :)

So how does one celebrate a milestone birthday in the midst of a pandemic? Here’s how it went down here at Casa Fishbowl:

  • First, we ate brunch. The menu by request included breakfast sausages, hash browns, french toast, and mimosas.
  • We watched nineteen-year-old home movies.
  • We went for a walk.
  • We ordered sushi for dinner from MHK, which was excellent as always.
  • We ate birthday cake from Thyme and Again.
  • We made mojitos.
  • We played a few rounds of Uno (which I lost in a spectacular fashion), and watched episodes of Community on Netflix.

Gifts for the newly minted 19-year-old included items from her Urban Outfitters wish list, salty snack foods, a pretty potted fern, and cold hard cash. Some of her friends left gifts on the porch (more potted plants, salty snacks, and beverages… clearly they know her well).

Easter was different this year too.

The girls didn’t expect anything for Easter so they pretty much walked right by the living room, where the Easter tree resides and the Easter Bunny tends to leave all the chocolate.

We went for (another) walk, cooked a ham with the usual sides (apparently my mashed potatoes are the best in the world!), and raised a glass to loved ones who are near and wide and a few who are no longer with us. We ate leftover cake and then watched Tiger King on Netflix. It was a low-key day, but I didn’t mind too much.

What about you? How different was your Easter this year? Or was it the same?
