a peek inside the fishbowl

Saturday night

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Misc. life

Saturday night was Mark’s office party, a sit-down dinner at the Sala San Marco banquet hall on Preston Street.

Fishbowl reader Caroline was there. I was so pleased to see her, but I had to laugh. The first things she said to me were:

  • 1) Dooce is having a baby!
  • 2) Why didn’t you post a photo of what you were going to wear?

Some people don’t get blogging. Caroline does, and I love it.

She’s not the only person who wondered why I didn’t post about it and why I didn’t let you all vote on my footwear. So I will write about it now, but it will have to be without photos because I really don’t feel like getting dressed right now. (YES I AM STILL IN MY PJ’S, OKAY!)

I described my outfit to Porter like something out of the naughty secretaries club. All I needed was a pair of glasses and my hair done up a tight bun, reigned in by a solitary hairpin so that when I took that pin out I could shake my head in slow motion and let my luxurious mane of hair tumble down over my shoulders. ;)

All kidding aside, I didn’t post about it because I just decided that This Was The Year I Would Not Fret. I didn’t feel like creating any additional stress. So I found something to wear in the depths of my closet. I wore a black pencil skirt, black fishnets, and a funky purple short sleeve top. I think the top looked really good, but while I was in the ladies room a woman from the same party turned to me and told me my shirt looked like something from Futurama.  I told her it would look even more so if I had a big eyeball in the middle of my forehead.

I left the ladies room wondering, like, what the hell. I know she meant it as a compliment (her Futurama comment was preceded by some kind words) but STILL.

I did buy new shoes for the occaision. Shiny black high heels with a sexy rounded toe. I can’t wear pointy-toed shoes because it makes my size tens look like elven twelves and I can’t live like that. Mark mocked me for breaking in a pair of new shoes the same day of the party but I have to tell ya, they were actually COMFORTABLE and I was even able to dance in them (as much as I could in a pencil skirt anyway).

The highlights of the evening were twofold:

1) The pasta entree had a cream sauce instead of the usual thin tomato sauce
2) Mark won a draw for a night for two at Brookstreet Hotel

Cool huh? I hope he brings me.

Anyway, we stuffed ourselves (which is particular hard to do when wearing FOUNDATION GARMENTS) and had a jolly little time overall.

I think the topic of foundation garments should be a whole new post. Hmm.

It was the next morning that I woke to Mark telling me that Pixie was dead. Oh dear. The girls took it pretty hard when we told them later. Sarah pretty much cried herself to sleep last night. There wasn’t anything I could say that could make her feel better.

What a weekend. How was yours?

Love the description of what you wore. I would love to see a picture of what you wore but I don’t need one to believe you were stunning! Heck, you make tshirts and jeans look pretty nice!

I think tears are good to get out when a being you love dies, you are right, there’s nothing you can say. Neither of your girls will forget Pixie or the way they felt about her passing. Hope Sarah woke up feeling just a bit better today. xoxox

You looked mahvelous on party night!!!!Stunning, sleek and sophisticated. Not futurama-istic at all!!

I went to put on a foundation garment under my dress on Saturday night and I couldn’t get it up so I yelled at it and threw it across the room and it lay there in a sullen black heap and now is in landfill somewhere – today being garbage day.

It was great to see you but I always feel at that party that I don’t get to spend enough time with the really interesting people I only see once a year – we’ll have to blog talk at another time.
