It’s Monday and I’m writing instead of doing

Oh, the weekend was indeed a busy one.

Friday:
Dinner at a friend’s followed by a sampling of the Westfest music scene. (Sometimes Westfest means waiting patiently for something to begin):

Westfest

Saturday:
More Westfest.

Westfest loom

… followed by a family event in Arnprior where our children spent almost two hours on a large trampoline:

Trampoline

… and ate cake with cousins and kids:

We had to leave early because the girls each had a social engagement. Mark and I went to… (can you guess?) Westfest.

Sunday:
Mark spent most of the day working on a secret-to-be-revealed-soon-kind-of-project (hint: it required furniture assembly and some cursing) and then …  there was more Westfest. But this time I was volunteering at the Westboro Community Association booth which was directly across the street and downwind from The Works. Therefore I had no choice but to give in to the call of the Westfest burg ($7.00: caramelized onion, BBQ sauce and cheddar).

Thanks to everyone who stopped by to say hello!

Is it just my imagination or did Westfest seem better/more interesting than in previous years?

Sunday night we went to see the 3D-version of Pixar’s UP. It was a great film. I laughed and I cried. It was an artful and gorgeous cinematic experience and we all enjoyed it very much. Do note, it is PG rated. Some parts of the film are very suspenseful and might be frightening for some children. Sarah (who just turned 8) even came to sit on my lap at one point.

We were all rather tired this morning but I had a feeling (and I was right) that this was the kind of movie worth seeing on the big screen. I’m glad we went.

As a result of weekend busyness our house looks like the circus has been camping out at our house; including the elephants and the acrobats.

The irony is not lost on me. I know I should be snapping into action but I needed to get this out while I drank my coffee. :)

Ok. Now. Coffee is done. I’m off the gym, and then I’ll be truly ready to start my day. I have a couple of very exciting writing gigs, some web work and some photos to print out for class. And maybe a flash to buy tomorrow?

How was your weekend?

We were at Westfest Saturday afternoon. It was a lot of fun, but I think I would’ve enjoyed it a bit more sans kids. Would’ve loved to have taken some pictures, but found the camera to be one more thing I was afraid of losing track of… three kids were enough to handle!

The hubs and I had a ‘date weekend’. The whole weekend to ourselves! It was fantastic. I am hoping to take my daughter to see the movie UP on Tuesday, but maybe she is a bit too young? She’s 6. Although she has seen ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’. What do you think?

I hesitate making very specific age-recommendations on these kinds of things because all kids are different re: the scare factor, and parents are all different re: what kinds of plot lines they do or do not want to expose their children to when they’re small.

Nightmare Before Christmas (which we loved) has a creep/nightmare factor that might freak some kids out but not others. UP is different so I’m wondering if I’d only be comparing apples to oranges. The action scenes are suspenseful and dramatic, and I don’t want to give anything away but there is some death in there as well (but well-handled, as one would expect from a Pixar film).

There’s a website called Common Sense Media which gives parents a place to rate and discuss films with other parents. Here’s what they had to say about Up.

We went to WestFest last night for the first time to see a friend play on stage in a band called Rudeboy… our 5 yr-old son danced to the Ska music for the full hour! What a great festival! We’ll be coming back next year for sure during the day. I was only a bit disappointed that most of the shops were closing down at 5pm or were already closed when we got there. I realize that they probably normally close at that time on a Sunday, but thought they all might stay open for the end of the festival… it could have been the threat of rain that might have kept people away though!

It was a busy weekend for us as well, but we went down to Westfest twice. It did seem better than last year, but maybe that is just because we did more. The free bike “parking lot” is a great idea (check your bike into a safe area and pick it up later). I think we enjoyed the street musicians the most…especially all the kids who were playing guitar or violin or some such thing…it was great seeing them out there doing there best.
