You can’t have a good photo if you ain’t got no light

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Oh! Things!|Photography

And now I have light.

I’ve been playing with my off-camera flash and trying to figure out how to use it with my new Nikon umbrella.

Check out this impromptu photo I shot in my darkish living room (!) :

I know she’s wrinkled beyon believe but isn’t the lighting soft and gorgeous and NOT AT ALL FLASHY AND WASHY OUTY? Light adds drama and emotion and depth.

I am thrilled to bits.

Gorgeous. And congrats on your new Umbrella, I use mine for both off camera flash and a stationary bulb, either way it makes for good light.

Fantastic! Looks like natural light from the window. :)

Beautiful fill and great skin tones. It’s liberating finally getting rid of the shadows behind people! Set up a kick light and you can put a fork in it :) Maybe move a little higher next time so she can lift her chin a titch, and open up another stop or even two to put the focus more clearly on those lovely eyes… Have you got a split-ring viewfinder? If you’re working with a DSLR, you can find third party ones that’ll free you from the shackles of AF.

Thanks Jeff!
For sure I need to play with it more. If I’d had time I would have! This is one of exactly two shots Emma let me take of her. She didn’t have the patience to sit for longer than that. :)

Thanks for the tip re: the Split-ring. Might look into that.
