I’m not a cookie baker. I’m a cookie EATER, but I’m not a cookie baker. So it goes without saying that every Christmas I feel like a failure in the cookie department. I just can’t motivate myself to mix together butter and sugar and crank out something that looks and tastes amazing. (Honestly, I prefer […]

Early morning thoughts about caramel apples

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Recipes and Food

I am writing this at 3:30 a.m. Piper woke me up. I tried going back to sleep but I found myself with the chorus of “What the Fox Say” so deeply fixed in my brain that I had to get up and do something before I suffocated myself with my own pillow. (“Ring-ding-ding-ding-dingeringeding!“) And that’s […]

Butter tarts!

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Easy ways to make kids happy|Recipes and Food

Once the cooler weather hits, I start craving things like this: If you’re not the kind of person who likes sweet treats (but not rolling out crust) you can try this recipe that involves ready-made tart shells. OR you can try this recipe for butter tart squares. Do you have a favourite butter tart recipe? […]

Our new favourite destination for bubble tea

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Ottawa|Recipes and Food

Time to strike another thing off our summer bucket list!

Have you tried bubble tea? We’ve been regular patrons of Bubblicity on Somerset for the past few years and also tried making our own. Unfortunately the last few visits were nothing to write home about, and I was open to finding a new source for this delicious stuff. That’s why I’m really glad we found this place!

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our dog Piper who is kind of a big deal on Instagram. We also have two human daughters: Emma (20) and Sarah (18). During the day I work as a writer at The Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999. The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, family travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa for families. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
