Ottawa giveaway alert! Get stuff and feel good doing it with Ten Thousand Villages

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Fishbowl patrons|Giveaways and product reviews

This giveaway is hosted by Fishbowl Patron, Ten Thousand Villages. Yay!

You know what I love about Ten Thousand Villages? They are continually looking for new ways to support producers, their families and communities in developing countries AND they have turned the act of shopping into something that is helpful and useful, instead of being all about consuming.

Take for example, their Give Opportunity campaigns. It’s a unique way to support projects their producers above and beyond the normal practices of Fair Trade. The Give campaign started with journal sets, of which over 280 have sold across the country, providing hundreds of students with school bags.

They now have a Give campaign around three beautiful bags. The style pictured below is the one that’s part of today’s giveaway. Isn’t it gorgeous? Classy AND practical.

Light & Shadow Shoulder Bag
Black and white. Sun and shade. A bag for adventures and quiet times. This fabulous summer bag is perfect for summer days.

$10 out of every purchase of this bag will help to buy school uniforms, backpacks and stationary for students in Bagladesh through the Saidpur School Program.

It bears repeating: if you buy this bag, it will help others who are less fortunate.

You can read more about the bags and the education program it will support at the Ten Thousand Villages Ottawa blog.

ANYWAY. Yes. This giveaway is for one of the Light & Shadow shoulder bags pictured above. (Retail value $70.)

Interested? Please read the next part carefully:

  • This giveaway is open to anyone residing in the Ottawa area but is void in Quebec. (Sorry friends, here’s why.)
  • In order for your entry to qualify, please take a moment to do some window shopping around the Ten Thousand Villages online catalogue and use the comments field below to tell us what catches your fancy! (This is just me being nosy.)
  • Please note that the bag must be picked up at one of the two Ottawa-area Ten Thousand Villages stores in a timely fashion. There’s one in the Glebe and one in Westboro.
  • If you can’t post your comment because you’re behind a firewall at work (or whatever), you can email it to me for posting at andrea at quietfish dot com (Please note, I cannot be responsible if your entry is misdirected or gets stuck in my Spam folder!)
  • One entry per person please! We want lots of people to have the opportunity to win.
  • Good karma goes to those who tweet or post about this on your blog or Facebook. Seriously.

That’s it! I will do a random draw of qualifying comments using Random.org at noon EST on Friday July 20, 2012. I hope the winner will tell everyone she knows where she got her great new bag, because more people should know about this fantastic program.

Thank you Ten Thousand Villages, for the great work you do!

Good luck everyone!

Ten Thousand Villages is my go-to spot for birthday and Xmas gifts for my three sisters. I usually pick up three similar items and then let them trade if they want to. One year it was pottery bowls, another it was candleholders; I’m thinking baskets this year. I never leave the store empty handed!

I like the tree of life bombshell necklace, not only for its intrinsic beauty but also for what it represents.

Oh, how I love Ten Thousand Villages. I love their plant pots, ceramics, wall hangings (all those tree of life ones!) and of course jewellery. And chocolate. Can’t forget the chocolate. And the best looking tree ornaments. I could go on :)

I’m a huge fan of virtually everything at Ten Thousand Villages. I could spend hours and a small fortune in there every time I go.
I’m a big fan of their incredibly unique jewellery, and also their home decor. I’m currently digging the Tree of Life Wall Hanging (http://www.tenthousandvillages.ca/cgi-bin/category.cgi?type=store&item=8001040).
Can’t wait until Christmas rolls around so I can go in and see what they have in store! (I have to limit myself!)

Great giveaway Andrea! I love the store – the housewares are beautiful and I covet the scarves. I’m eying the moonstone earrings to give a special friend on an upcoming birthday.

I like the pottery. Especially the pieces that are blue/white (Vietnamese, I think?). It’s fun to go to 10KV with the kids. We note the countries that supply the goods and discuss how it’s a good idea to be fair/decent to those who work so hard to make a living.

I think I’m the only one commenting that hasn’t been to 10 thousand villages in SO long.
But….that said, after browsing through the catalogue!!

Where to start? The garden stuff….turtle, birdhouse(double) The Jewellery!
The scarves, circle of life bracelet, COFFEE! I forgot about their coffee!
I don’t get out much:-)
I am taking my Grandaughter THIS weekend to get the turtle and the birdhouse!
Will probably end up buying her jewellery:-)

I LOVE the bag and am in serious need of one!

Thanks Andrea……again!

Love this store! And what a great campaign they have right now with the bags. They have such an extensive catalogue so it’s hard to narrow down my favorites but I am drawn towards a few things; the Batik Wood chess set for my almost 9yr old (waaay out of our budget but oh so beautiful!) or the cute wooden Tic Tac Toe set that my 6yr old would love. If I want to be selfish I would pick a pair of earrings (or two) for myself! I especially love the Silver Stem Tuareg pair, the Silver & Amethyst Flower Earrings, or the Silver Triangle earrings.

A friend posted your cookies-in-the-car entry on FB today and I am so glad. Your blog is great!

I love Ten Thousand Villages. There’s a pair of obsidian teardrop earrings on their website right now that look beautiful, but honestly, I love at least half the things they carry.

Today is a great day for a Hammock

I do not have one so, yes this spoke to me in sultry whispers of laziness and comfort. Pims and a good book.

Love 10,000 Villages – great bag, wonderful opportunity!

Love this shop, so many wonderful items to buy as gifts or for yourself! I adore those Owl Whimsy Wind Chimes, just beautiful work from a great organization.

Cards! I buy all my cards there as I hate “wasting” money on commercial cards but my husband loves receiving them! Their cards are a great solution – I can feel good and my husband still gets the sentiment (and not another last minute homemade one that falls over :)

I buy my Christmas cards from Ten Thousand Villages every year, but I must say from looking at their catalogue, the bangles from India are gorgeous! There is a green one I think would look particularly nice on my wrist…

I love that I now know that they have a website! I had no idea that I could shop online. I’ve always loved going into the shop but to be able to look for gift ideas online is fabulous. I love their scarves and jewellry…but the bobbing birds caught my eye this time!
