One of the things that I’m absolutely clinging to right now is our camping trip this summer. It looks like MIGHT be a go, but frankly, I wouldn’t be too surprised if it was cancelled by the powers that be. We booked our campsite months ago, pre-Covid. According to Ontario Parks our campground will be open by the […]

How to read more books in 2015

Posted by: andrea tomkins In: Challenge me, challenge you

Now that we have turned the page on a new calendar year I’ve decided to track my reads in 2015 and see how many I can squeeze in, and possibly (hopefully!) read even more. Here’s my strategy: I’m going to read more books this year by (a) maintaining some good reading habits and (b) finding new material. 1) […]

Our favourite graphic novel

We’re big fans of the Amulet series here at Casa Fishbowl, and were THRILLED to discover that the latest one (number 6!) is out. If you’re looking for something new to capture the interest of a reluctant reader or to inspire a young artist/writer/designer THIS IS IT.  Even if you’re neither of those things, it’s a very […]

I can’t tell you how many books show up on my doorstep and on my desk at work. Most don’t even come with a note or explanation. I only assume that the universe is trying to tell me I need to read more, either that, or the publishers would like me to review and write about their […]

I think that one of our jobs as parents is to help our kids achieve the things that they want to achieve. This is why we do things like drive them to their various lessons/activities/sports camps, sit in the rain/bleachers/boiling sun while they pursue said activity… help them with their homework, and generally just Give […]

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our dog Piper who is kind of a big deal on Instagram. We also have two human offspring: Emma (24) and Sarah (22). During the day I work as a writer at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999. The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
