It’s been frickin cold outside here in Ottawa lately. Emma and I walked to the post office the other day and she asked me if she could wear mittens.
It’s mid-May, I explained. I packed them up weeks ago, in a burst of optimism and hope that we’d never reach the freezing mark again until December.
Sometime yesterday the furnace died. I had an inkling there was a problem. I kept trying to bump up the temperature on our digital thermostat, only to come back a couple hours later to find that it hadn’t budged.
Last night, Mark confirmed that it wasn’t working. This morning, it’s 8 degrees outside and I am finding novel and alternate ways of heating the house i.e. showering with the door open or warming our hands over the toaster.

Living room update
I neglected to mention that there’ve been delays. It was all supposed to come together this week, but our deadline has been postponed for a few days. Delivery and set up of all the goods is supposed to be happening early next week, to be photographed by the Ottawa Citizen on Thursday. Yay!
Mary and Gary are coming over today to finish some little bits that weren’t done. Mary will be helping me paint the mantle. Gary and Mark are going to nail down some quarterround that was sorely missing.
There was some kind of rubbery sealer clogging up the circumference of the floor where it met the walls. To get ready for today, Mark and I spent hours chipping it away so the quarterround would fit snugly against the wall… inch.by.painful.inch.
Off to make hot coffee!
