A bit about sweetness

Posted by andrea in: Recipes and Food

Mary recently asked a question that has rarely been asked of me.

“What’s your favourite dessert?” After which she said: “because I’ll bake it for you.”

In the heat of the moment my answer was carrot cake with cream cheese icing. And let me tell you that I don’t regret it one bite.

She put me on the spot. That baker lady. My mind was swimming – I LOVE EVERYTHING – but as I gave it more thought I realized there are definitely some baked goods that stand out for me and others that I just don’t feel passionately about at all.

It got me thinking about which I like most. Is there an absolute favourite? Well, no. Not really.

So for future reference (Mary’s and everyone else’s) here’s my attempt to rank baked goods based on my own personal preferences:

Tied for first, the ABC of baked goods:

  • Apple pie with ice cream
  • Banana cream pie
  • Carrot cake

    Also in first place:

  • Shortbread
  • Butter tarts
  • Nanaimo bars
  • Hazelnut cookies – something >like these
  • Baked meringue with whipped cream

Really really close to first place:

  • Vanilla cake with strawberries and vanilla icing
  • Strawberry and custard tarts
  • Rice krispy squares
  • Fudge (chocolate, maple, butterscotch, I’ve never had bad fudge)
  • Ginger cookies

    Next:

  • Brownies
  • Berry pies (strawberry/blueberry)

Meh: (I could pass on these, and/or wouldn’t rush to order in a restaurant):

  • Chocolate cake (especially with chocolate icing)
  • Black forest cake
  • Assorted cheesecakes
  • Muffins in general
  • Donuts (unless I’m having a craving)
  • Danishes

    Never, no way, nuh-uh:

  • Fruit cake or anything with plasticized fruit.

I’m so sending you a fruitcake for Christmas! But don’t worry, I don’t use plasticized fruit in mine.
