love letters

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Misc. life

So this is where it all begins. This is a first for our household. Can you believe it?

I can’t tell you who this lovely package is from. I promised Emma he will remain anonymous.

The words are written on the inside of a candy box. (In case you’re wondering, that last line is “you smell like honey.” She and I spent a bit of time analyzing it.) His mom helped him with a short note taped on the front, one that ended with a several rows of X’s and O’s.

Emma is very impressed. Who wouldn’t be?

She talks often about how much she likes him. She tells me about her little group of friends and their schoolyard antics. But until now I wasn’t sure if this relationship was reciprocal.

An older boy deliberately tripped her in the schoolyard yesterday and she went headfirst into the sand. She was, understandably, pretty upset about it. But as she gave me the bad news about her fall she broke into big smiles. Her Boy was the first to help her up. He was really worried about me, she said.

He sounds like a very nice boy, I said.
He is.
So when do I get to meet him?

Oh, maybe when I’m older.

I had to laugh.

I think my favourite part is that his mom helped him with it. I’m not sure if I’m looking forward to or dreading the day I get roped into helping my boys write a love poem to a girl at school…

It’s too soon!!!!!
