Participate in our City-sanctioned garbage pick-a-thon

Posted by andrea tomkins in: - Westboro|Misc. life|Ottawa

I’ve had this feeeeeling today. A nagging, annoying grousy feeeeling and it hasn’t gone away, no matter how much coffee or chocolate or hot buttered toast I’ve eaten thus far.

“WHAT, WHAT IS IT?” I asked myself. “WHAT DO YOU WANT FROM ME YOU TOAST-CRAVING BODY?”
“Well, I’m feeling yicky today.”
“Yicky? Is that the same as yucky?”
“No, not it isn’t. *sigh*”
“Please define YICKY because I sincerely doubt it’s a real word.”
“Yicky: not all there. A mildly sickly feeling caused by something that’s missing. Something that needs to be done and is not being done.”
“I hope you’re not referring to the laundry, because that machine has been running all day and…”
“No, it’s not the LAUNDRY. It’s something else. There’s a spark that’s missing, and it’s definitely not laundry.”
“Are you talking about fun?”
“Yes, fun.”
“But we had FUN all weekend! We went to a street party, celebrated Father’s Day and lounged by the pool all day on Sunday. What more do you want?!”
“Is there a limit on how much fun someone should have? Is that what you’re saying?”
“Well, no.”
“We need something else.”
“Alright then. You win. How about a CHALLENGE?”
“A challenge you say… hmmm. That might be the ticket…”

And that, my pretties, was the entire internal conversation I had with myself a mere five minutes ago.

June 23rd is the first official Give Away Day here in Ottawa. (More info is available on the City of Ottawa website.)

And I am challenging you, fellow Ottawans:

1) Leave some unwanted/unloved goods by the curb on the 23rd.

2) Go trolling for treasure.

3) If you find any treasures, post it on your blog and/or let us know in the comments.

4) We’ll put it to a vote and see who walked away with the best find.

You game? Let me know in the comments if you’re up for some treasure hunting.

I’m way behind in my blog reading, but noticed this in the paper today. Very cool! We were thinking about having a garage sale tomorrow anyway, but maybe we’ll just lay the stuff out and let people help themselves!

I’ve noticed the growing tendency for the post-garage sale freebies at the curb on Saturday night in the ‘burbs, and think it’s terrific! We’ve gotten a hockey helmet and a tripod and donated a sand and water table so far this year.

We put about a dozen items out by the curb and by the end of the day all of them were gone. All that is, except for the one item I thought would go for sure: our old coffee maker. Some of the things we put out included a floor lamp, some kitchen-related stuff and a metal faux-woodgrain coffeetable/electric fan.

What did I find? Nothing! I saw a lot of single items put out for Give Away Day (a freezer, a grass trimmer, a stove, a table etc.) but nothing I could have used. Oh well. I’m just glad someone took our stuff!
