a peek inside the fishbowl

Monday already?

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Oh! Things!|Photography

I was making my coffee this morning when I looked outside to see the weirdest thing. A squirrel was dragging his furry little butt across the top of our picnic table.

“There’s a squirrel dragging his bum across our picnic table!” I shouted to Mark.
“Maybe it’s itchy!” he said.

Uh huh. That table is going to get SOME KIND OF SCRUBBING.

This weekend was a busy one, filled with fun stuff, not to mention reams and reams of HAIR and HOT WATER and a General Feeling of Alarm and Squeamishness.

*sigh*

Saturday morning Sarah and I went to a couple of church yard sales down the street. Thank goodness for little people! They see things you don’t. If she hadn’t been with me we wouldn’t have found this super-awesome microscope, complete with six slides! It was a dollar well-spent, don’t you think?

Sarah's new microscope

I went out alone later and I picked up some treasures too. I spent a couple hours at the annual Art in the Park in the Glebe. And to think, I came very very close to missing it. As I do every year, I wandered around, feeling a mix of joy and wistful sadness that I could not afford to really buy anything. Gah. No, seriously, it was incredible. If you want to buy art – any art – this is the place to go. There was so much great stuff this year. I fell in love and had my heart broken about 20 times.

But I didn’t walk away empty-handed. No, I bought an artistic matchbox holder from a group of student artists:

Ha. It still makes me laugh.

On my way home I stopped at a couple of garage sales. First, I stopped at a place a few blocks away from me. I couldn’t believe it, this lady had the coolest stuff, above and beyond the usual crap one sees at garage sales. Seeing her spread was like peeking into her soul. She was selling vintage hankies and embroidery and hatboxes and more. She even had a hat rack.

I walked away with little rugs for my tableware:

Tiny rugs! Or coasters. Whatev.

… and a book …

Vintage book

… and sweet old bed topper that is currently hanging out on the line.

At a different garage sale, I was given some cupcakes:

cupcakes!

I know, not exactly a traditional garage sale item, but how could I say no to cupcakes? Especially when they were whipped up by someone I know (and like so much!) in blogland?

The cute cupcakes did me in. I bought some of her dishes. Here’s a shot of one of the smaller ones, uh, post-cupcake:

The plates

Crazy huh? And the day was far from over.

Later we did some of this:

diving

And I did lots of this:

And here’s Sarah with a sweet little parasol she bought at the church yard sale earlier:

But our weekend wasn’t entirely full of leisure, no siree. On Sunday we motored to Marmora (at a price of $1.33/litre – ack) to do some gardening for my mother. It was hot, oh boy, and the labour was backbreaking, but after all was said and done we did some of this. And that kind of made it all worthwhile.

I love the cupcakes! I recognized them instantly and though you already knew grrl in real life :).

I love the new look of your blog, by the way. You have been busy. Your weekend seems like it was fun and full. Sarah looks beautiful under her new umbrella. If only we all had the thought to walk around with one of those, I wouldn’t have a burn on the back of my shoulders (I forgot my sunscreen, silly me).

What a wonderful weekend.

I bought a magnet from the same booth at art in the park! My is of a squirrel, but it’s not dragging it’s butt.

Didn’t you love the kinetic sculptures and the wooden bird figures that were near the Bank St. entrance? And did you see the tin-can piranha-like hanging sculptures? And what about the creepy yet interesting creature sketches on the cardboard?

Oh I do love Art in the Park. I email next year to remind you about it!

BeachMama: No, I didn’t know her IRL… purely through the blogosphere, although I can’t recall how I first started reading her blog. I’ll tell you, she is just as sweet as her blog makes her out to be!

Allison: I can’t believe you bought at the same booth.
Yes, I LOVED the kinetic sculptures! In fact, I was *this* close to buying one but I noticed (a) he didn’t have credit card machine (b) someone had just bought something and was paying $200+ in fresh twenties.

Tin can fish person has been in the circuit for awhile but they are far far out of my affordibility range. And I also stopped to admire the works of Mr. Creepy and Interesting. It’s weird that out of 200 vendors (?) we’d stop at the same booths. Did you see the one with the weird Cinderella puzzles and the double-sided funky “city themed” blocks? Again, I was very very close to buying.

I also stopped to talk to an artist named Alison Fowler. I adore her stuff. She had a painting of birch trees that made me stop in my tracks. I might have to pay a visit to her studio. It’s just over in West Wellington.

Re: squirrel dragging his butt…quite common for dogs (we have one that does that). The annual trip to the vet usually takes care of the situation for a while.

Just wondering, is that lovely pool in your back yard? I’m jealous no matter the answer.

karen – the pool belongs to my inlaws. Sitting poolside with a newspaper and a cold drink is my idea of heaven!
