bits and bobs

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Misc. life

Emma is watching this classic Merrie Melodies on YouTube as I type. It’s one of my faves.

I have a load of delicates on the line downstairs (I line dry most of my clothes) and as soon as they’re dry I’m going to pile them in a suitcase. I leave for a media junket to Disney tomorrow morning. The PR folks emailed an itinerary and a lot has been planned out for me.  I can’t wait to get there.

I love to travel, but the transportation stageof travel makes me anxious. I’m can’t fully relax until l’m at my destination. I wish I wasn’t like that, but I am. I’m debating whether I should pack Gravol.

I have been busy wrapping up various bits of work before I go. I’m still not quite done.

We have been debating whether or not to invest in a MacBook before this trip. (Ain’t she a beaut?) It would have been nice to have, but I have been asking myself, do I really need it? And can I continue to get by without one?

I have some new blog patrons. Have you noticed? Their ads are in the far right column. I’m very happy with how this has all been going. Yay for patrons!

I have a big post brewing about holiday spending. It’ll have to wait until I come back from my trip. It’s something I’ve been thinking about quite a bit. Mark asked Emma last night what she’d like for Christmas. She said we already had a lot of toys (“our basement is full of toys mummy”) and couldn’t think of anything she wanted. A result, perhaps, of not watching commercial television? She doesn’t know what the “hot” toys are this holiday season. She asked for a remote-controlled car and a copy of the Guinness Book of World records. In a related conversation, I asked her how many gifts would be “enough.” She wavered between 10 and 12, and then settled on 10. But then she qualified that by saying that if she received 10 gifts she’d give five to poor people. Her eyes started to well up and she said, “I can’t imagine being poor and not getting any toys at Christmas.” What a kind soul.

More later… it’s back to work for now.

Hmm Media junket to Disney. Lucky you. Last night at dinner my 7 year old was chatting with us about what he wanted to do for a career. Being a athlete is his goal (has been for a while). I mentioned a sports reporter, saying he might like that. He said “no way mommy, I want to plaaaaaay the sports” but I figure I can plant the seed and see if it grows. Journalism sounds very interesting.

Oh my goodness! I love so many things at Lavish and Lime. But they don’t ship to the U.S. Maybe one day they will expand! :) Until then I will look and wish. Have fun on your trip! Be safe!

I picked up a Macbook last week. We’re loving it! We seem to have too many people with computing needs and not enough keyboards. Don’t want to push you over the edge but…

Huh. Isn’t that funny. I have been talking a lot with my husband and our kids about not exchanging gifts this year (except from Santa, of course). We are wondering what to do instead, or what boundaries to stick to. Should we exchange hand made gifts, or a donation to our charity of choice, or gifts that have a purpose (ie. pyjammas) or should we ask that the kids receive educational gifts only? I would love to hear what other people do…

If you are getting a laptop, we recommend a Mac (we have the MacBook). We bought one a year ago and it is great – you pay a little more up front than a PC laptop, but in the long run it is cheaper because it has everything you need. It has never given us a problem. You can get refurbished Mac’s from the Apple website, which can save a bit of money (there is also a certified Apple dealer in Hintonburg…I’ve spoken with them on the phone, but not actually been to the store yet). My god, we sound like evangalists…this is what happens when you switch to a Mac.
