Best place to pick your own Christmas tree in Ottawa*

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Easy ways to make kids happy|Ottawa

* or (as Ikea put it recently), if you don’t celebrate Christmas, where can you find a 5ft air freshener?

Pete dropped off our wreath the other night. I didn’t get to see him, unfortunately, but a bunch of you did! (The blogging world is such a funny place, isn’t it?) Thanks again to those of you who made a purchase. I am duly impressed with your giving spirit.

I’ve never had a live wreath. It smells wonderful. Every time we open the front door we get a good whiff.

And of course the smell of Christmas is reminding me that we need to pick up our tree soon. It’s going to be next week, although I wish I had ours up already. I love what it adds to our house.

We used to get our tree from the Nepean Kiwanis near Mark’s work. I liked the idea that our dollars were going to a worthy cause. Sadly, they got out of the tree business a couple years ago. Last year we got our tree at Ikea. I was a little leery, but it was a beautiful tree. You buy a tree for $20 and get a $20 coupon for purchases over $75 AND (if I’m not mistaken) a percentage goes to Tree Canada.

Do you get a live tree or do you have an artificial one?

We get a real tree every year. Seeing as they’re farmed I have no qualms about someone cutting one down on my behalf. They’re a totally renewable resource.

I am half-considering doing the “U pick” thing at a tree farm this year. I know there are a few pick your own Christmas tree farms around Ottawa. I think there’s one down Fallowfield way. Has anyone found a good one? Would you recommend it or not? Inquiring minds want to know!

I’m in the same boat as you; I want to pick our own this year but don’t know some of the better places to go that aren’t too far out. I expect they are all generally good however. We also got ours at Ikea last year and Emily was so disappointed that we didn’t cut our own so on Saturday, along with throngs of other families I expect, we’ll be heading out somewhere with a saw.

Thomas Tree Farm in North Gower – good experience, hot chocolate & cookies, fires burning. very pleasant outing and a great tree! thomastreefarm.ca
However last yr we took the easy route & bought a tree beside Trailhead as we can drag it home from there. It’s the fuel-efficient option!

Ikea definitely gives a percentage back to Tree Canada, and every summer they have tree planting days for their staff-they also plant more trees than they reap :) Hooray!

We too go to Thomas Tree Farm. It is great. Last year, it was like a winter wonderland with all the snow, the horse and wagon, and the treats by the fire afterwards. Here is a link if you need it: thomastreefarm.ca

We just returned from Thomas Tree Farm in North Gower and it was just wonderful! AND the Balsams are back baby! We were able to get a tall and lush balsam this year after a bit of a sabbatical due to waiting for those evergreens to grow!!!

We have gone to Cedar Hill Berry Farm a few times and it has been an enjoyable experience and we cut our own trees. Checking prices online for this year they seem to have the best at $32 for Spruce and Scotch Pine. But they are out a ways in Pakenham.

Fallowfield Farm just outside of Stittsville is the best place to cut your own tree. They have wagon rides with tractors and horses, a big bonfire and free hot chocolate. We even saw Santa out there on the weekend. We bought hotdogs for lunch (with all proceeds going to charity) and warmed up in the barn. The kids just love it. We have been going there for years!!

Hi everyone: My name is Kenny and I am the new owner of the Fallowfield Tree Farm. Unfortunately the old owner has passed on and I have taken over the business. I myself have farmed for over 30 years dairy and cash crop farming just a step away from the Tree Farm so I decided to take over the business as it was so convenient and close. We have expanded the Tree Farm into more of a Landscape Business as well as Christmas Trees. We purchased a large Tree Spade and now sell a wide variety of large landscape trees during the spring and fall months which has been turning into a great success! Since some of the trees on the farm have been getting a bit large for Christmas trees we now sell and plant these trees for people in there front or back yards!
But as far as Christmas Trees go we have been doing the same thing with just a few extras. Lots of fresh pre cut firs or spruce up front or cut your own yourself— all which is free and included with the price of your tree as follows:— free hay wagon rides with the tractor or our horses (your choice), bonfire to warm up with or roast some of our large marshmallows, free hot choclate and mini marshmallows in the warm up barn, shaking and wrapping your tree, help with your tree on the car if needed, and no worries if you forgot some rope or saw we got lots of extras. All for approx- 60 dollars 6-8ft tree. What a better way for you and your family to get into the Christmas spirit. To enjoy that old time tradition of coming out to the farm!! Or for a minumal cost call us sometime and we will take your family or friends for a horse drawn wagon or sleigh ride and hang out in our warm up barn for the day or evening!! Please note our phone number has changed as follows 613-720-3451 and email is on our website at http://www.fallowfieldtreefarm.com

Have a Merry Chritmas and all the best for the New Year!!!

I just thought I would comment on my experiences with two local tree farms this year. To give you some background growing up I always would cut down trees grown on land that our family owned. This year I was going to try a tree farm and hoped to get a nice looking tree.

This weekend I went to Fallowfield Tree Farm expecting to have a different experience where trees were grown and cared for properly. After waiting some time for a ‘sleigh ride’ and venturing out to their tree field, i was absolutely shocked. You get dropped off in one of two fields (we checked both), and I am not sure how you can call this a tree farm. It was simply a field where trees happened to be growing, and obviously had not been cared for or trimmed properly. There was a small selection of trees in the 6-8 foot range, most of which were wind-burnt, had massive holes in them etc. After walking around for about 30 minutes trying to find a tree that was salvageable we decided to leave without a tree.

After leaving we decided to go to another local tree farm, Thomas. With low expectations going in after seeing the previous ‘tree farm’ I was pleasantly surprised. The staff were far more professional to begin with, and walking in you could immediately see the location had been cared for. Now for the best part: the trees! Thomas’ also offered a sleigh ride on a tractor which brought you to the trees. It was a completely different sight, seeing tree after tree in lines that were properly cared for. Honestly almost every tree I saw there was better than any tree I saw at Fallowfield Tree Farm.

I hope this review saves someone else the disappointment I had. Unless you want to be dumped in a field with scraggly trees, avoid Fallowfield Tree Farm. If you want a great experience with plenty of nice trees to pick from, head over to Thomas Tree Farms.

If you want a fun family experience, then I would definitely recommend the Fallowfield Tree Farm. I’ve brought my three kids for the last 5 years to cut down our very own Christmas tree. The staff have always been friendly, fun and always informative. They will go out of their way to make sure you and your families have a great fun experience. Unlike other places, the Fallowfield Tree Farm allows us to bring our dog Zoe , which we consider to be part of the family. They offer many different elements to the tree search experience, which are completely FREE. They offer festive music, a warm barn to enjoy hot chocolate in, or enjoy roasting marshmallows by the campfire. They will also shake your tree , wrap iyour tree and tie it to your car for you! On a final note, I cannot get over how beautiful the back of the forest is. That’s one thing I love about going back every year to pick a tree. They grow naturally and it is a tremendous sight to see.

Hi all,
We go to Lairds U-Cut Tree Farm. They have awesome trees that last forever. There is no big ‘spectacle’ … just great trees and great friendly service. We always have a family brunch after so that is our hot choc etc so to speak :)

i got an Ikea Christmas tree and it is the ugliest tree I have (ever ever) had. It is twisted, uneven, skinny in most places but with huge bulges in several spots, gaps, etc. Don’t get an IKEA tree whatever you do!!!

I would not recommend Fallowfield Tree Farm. I just got my tree from there Dec 15, 2014 and I felt ripped off. The tree cost $80 while the website says they will only cost $50-$60. Most trees were either too big or too small. There was no hay ride and no free hot chocolate despite claims that there would be. Service was from one guy that was there and it was adequate.
