Can you Fit-in 15? (Now updated with prize info!)

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Giveaways and product reviews|Yaktivism

Yesterday I received an email from the Canadian Chiropractic Association (CCA) that I thought was interesting enough to post about here.

The CCA is hosting a blogger challenge to encourage active living and promote the CCA’s new web site.

The Fit-in 15 website features simple, no-cost, no-equipment ideas for creating your own 15 minutes of focused activity. A password-protected activity calendar lets users record their progress and sign up for the motivational email program to help stay on track.

CCA has asked a select bunch of bloggers to undertake 15 minutes of physical activity every day for one week. During that week, participants are supposed to chart their progress and share their personal “Fit-in 15” story online, however they so choose. At the end of the week, a panel of judges will review the entries and select three bloggers who managed to craft the best “Fit-in 15” story. Three grand prize winners will each receive an iPod Touch 16GB and a $20 iTunes gift card.

Apparently research shows that 90% of Canadians want to be more physically active, but cite lack of time as a main deterrent.

The emphasis of this campaign is not on dramatic transformation, but is to encourage people to start small and simply begin forming the habit of being active every day. I think this is entirely doable. I went out this morning for a 15-minute powerwalk and I was amazed at how easy it was. Why didn’t I think of this before?

The challenge starts today, Wednesday June 17, 2009. I’m going to be updating my progress on a separate page and tracking it there every day.

What about you? Can you squeeze in 15 minutes a day (starting today!) for the seven days?

There is a prize for Fishbowl readers who are interested in playing along.

Make the pledge in the comments below to do your own 15 minutes every day (for seven days!) and you can win an iPod shuffle as well as a $20 iTunes gift card. (Sweet huh?)

How to started:

  • Let me know in the comments below if you’d like to participate and enter the draw. Please note, this is a Canadian-based contest but U.S folks are more than welcome to play along (you just won’t qualify for the prize, sorry!)
  • Visit My Fit-in 15 or Upping My Game for practical tips on staying motivated.
  • I’d love it if you tracked your progress on your own blog if you have one. Let’s inspire other people to fit in some fitness into their daily routines! (ETA: this is not a requirement!)
  • Remember it has to be 15 minutes every day! Anything goes: gardening, walking the dog, running after your toddler at the park … etc. It doesn’t have to be 15 minutes on the elliptical trainer! Here’s a tip: do something you LOVE to do. Then it won’t seem like such a chore.
  • The challenge officially closes on June 24, 2009 at midnight EST. I’ll do a random draw on June 25th.

Who wants to try this with me?

I’d love to participate as it is something I do anyway – I actually aim for at least 30 minutes of some sort of exercise a day, and most days I manage to squeeze in an hour (even it if is just walking the dog). I’m a BIG proponent of doing something active every day. People forget that walking is great exercise. I also try to incorporate my exercise into my everyday living – e.g., biking to work, biking to get groceries, running to the store instead of driving, playing at the park with my daughter . . . I think if you can incorporate your exercise you are more likely to be fit as opposed to the “drive to the gym to workout model”. I mix up the everyday stuff (biking, walking) with some highter intensity sports stuff that I love (running, ultimate, weight lifting, swimming) for maximum health.

It is hard to fit it all in some days (I have a three year old and work full-time) but I place a high priority on exercise in the hopes of setting a good example for my family.

I don’t have my own blog though, so I guess I can’t enter the actual contest?

Readheadedmama: I like your approach to fitness. I think that’s the way to go.

Re: the prizing. It’s a two part thing.

(1) the CCA has already selected some bloggers to participate in the challenge (2) the bloggers have the option of opening it up to their readers for a prize as well… which is what I’m doing. :)

You don’t need a blog to win the iPod shuffle and iTunes gift card.

Clear as mud? (Ahhhhh. I must need more coffee!)

I’m game! Like Redheadedmama, I generally do at least 30 minutes of high-impact exercises during the week, but I tend to get a touch lazy through the weekends. This will motivate me. Can we tweet our results if we don’t have a blog, perhaps at #fitin15fish or something?

Today: 45 minutes of ice hockey

I’m in too! My kickboxing classes are done for the summer, so I’m trying to pick up some more active pursuits that will get me outdoors. I can certainly fit in 15 minutes a day.

(and I can vouch for Hellcat’s awesomeness with the hockey stuff. She’s a hockey fiend who makes it look easy – totally an inspiration, even to those of us who are totally incapable of skating)

Since I just started doing the 30 Day Shred this week, this should be easy. The Shred is 20 minutes long. But like Anna (BeachMama) I’ll try to do something else IN ADDITION to the Shred.

Do you want daily updates or can we do it at the end of the day?

Good post Andrea! All this week I have been lamenting my lack of activity and wondering how I can improve it, and get into a routine leaving for holidays this week.

The husband and I keep saying we are going to commit to an walk each day and have been ok with it. This is a good way to re-commit. Also to commit to avoiding the chocolate at work.

Will try to fit it into my blogging, but not sure how the updates will do while out West!

Sweet! A chance to win a cool prize for doing something I committed to do since last August—I’m totally in.

I adopted a dog last summer and with no fenced in yard it’s walking everyday for fun and function. I went from minimal activity to daily activity—morning, afternoon and evenings minimum 0.5 hour each time.

Good luck everybody and keep on moving!

Oh, I am completely in. Though it is Friday, I’ve spent more than 15 minutes a day thus far. I’ll do a blog post tomorrow on what I’ve been up to and to help spread the word!

Thanks for the chance to win! I’d love an ipod! It isn’t something that I would buy at all since our income has dropped so much but it sure would be nice. On “those days” (like yesterday) I put my 10 month old an 2 year old in the double stroller and off we go just so mommy can really walk….it would be such a blessing (and put more bounce in my step) to listen to music on the go too!

What a great example to our littles to be active!!
