#realfood

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Recipes and Food|Yaktivism

Remember the Hellman’s-sponsored confab I went to in Toronto back in May?

To summarize: some bloggers were flown in from across Canada to talk about eating seasonally and to get an advance preview of Hellman’s new Eat Real Eat Local campaign. As part of that campaign, Hellman’s pledged to give a quarter to Evergreen (to a maximum of $25,000) each time someone tags their online interactions (e.g. a Tweet, blog post, even a blog comment!) with the term “#realfood.

For today only (July 29), Hellmann’s is increasing the donation made to Evergreen to one dollar each time the #realfood tag is used.

Can we raise some extra bucks for Evergreen? Just because they’re awesome?

Just to make it interesting, tell me what kind of seasonal vegetable you’re enjoying right now. (And don’t forget to mention #realfood!)

Me: We went to the local farmer’s market on Sunday and bought heritage carrots (knobbly and incredibly sweet!), local peas, and local honey. We were going to buy some local beef too, but they were all sold out. Boo. But everything tasted so good. Like how real food is supposed to taste.

Over to you!

Simple but so yummy #realfood : garden fresh tomatoes and cucumbers. And we’re splitting a side of local beef with several family members at the end of the summer – I can’t wait to try it out!

The FIRST cherry tomato started turning red yesterday in my backyard. I’m not enjoying it yet, but by the weekend, lookout!

We bought a side of pork from the Ottawa Farmer’s market a week and a 1/2 ago and made bacon. It was awesome. Looking forward to making a true homemade BLT with tomatoes from the garden (if they every ripen) and homemade bread. #realfood

I have plans to hit the farmer’s market on Saturday but the sad thing is our area doesn’t have much in the way of farms. :(

hmmmm…. local #realfood

We hit the farmers market on Sunday and got amazing radishes grown inside the greenbelt. Some local bison and elk (really yummy) and some fresh fava beans. Never had fresh fava beans before but man are they good!

Tomatoes from Parkdale (the new vendor who sells toms she grows in her hothouse)

Cucumbers. Kirby cucs (as opposed to the long English variety). They’re the REAL, crunchy, sweet, small seed cucs. Thin slices in sour cream and vinegar, with salt and pepper. Oh yummy comfort food.

Raspberries on vanilla ice cream. Ooooh la la!

And last but not least…first pick beans. Sooooo good. Steamed with butter and/or mixed with pasta/butter/garlic. Fantastic!
