Mark’s Movember

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Yaktivism

First, some background about Movember in case you haven’t noticed a proliferation of mustachioed men in your workplace or in your neighborhood.

The Mo, slang for moustache, and November come together each year for Movember.

Movember challenges men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache. The rules are simple, start Movember 1st clean-shaven and then grow a moustache for the entire month. The moustache becomes the ribbon for men’s health, the means by which awareness and funds are raised for prostate cancer. Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, the men of Movember commit to growing a moustache for 30 days.

Mark is growing his facial hair and forgoing smooches ALL MONTH in order to raise money and awareness about prostate cancer, the #1 cancer affecting men today. Prostate Cancer Canada will use the money raised by Movember for the development of programs related to awareness, public education, advocacy, support of those affected and research into the prevention, detection, treatment and cure of prostate cancer.

And here we are – MO and all. (This photo was taken on day 11 FYI.)

I still think he’s pretty darn cute.

The MO is progressing, although I was secretly hoping he’d end up with one of these … which is MUCH MORE DRAMATIC, don’t you think?

Would you consider giving a dollar or two? Prostates everywhere will thank you. And so will I when the month is over and I can kiss my husband again. :)

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our dog Piper who is kind of a big deal on Instagram. We also have two human offspring: Emma (24) and Sarah (22). During the day I work as a writer at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999. The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa. I also love vegetables, photography, gadgets, and great design.
