A trip to see the Christmas lights on Taffy Lane

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Easy ways to make kids happy|Ottawa

There is only a smattering of people who’ve heard of Taffy Lane here in Ottawa.  It’s in Orleans, actually. (Googlemap here.)  If you’ve been there please raise your hand. If you haven’t, well, how shall I explain? Some Taffy Lane residents go hogwild with the Christmas decorations.

It’s a joy to behold. And sometimes it’s hard to know where to look:

I wonder, how did it start? Are there any annoyed neighbours? What are their hydro bills like at the end of the month?

We were there on Saturday night and Santa was there too, handing out candy canes.

We’ve been visiting Taffy Lane as part of our 25 Days of Christmas for the past handful of years. It’s a quick trip. Sometimes we bring hot chocolate or candy canes. This year we drove around the block once and decided to park at the church at the top of the street so we could have a second go on foot. It’s better to walk. Just bundle up and mind the traffic.

It is beautiful. I never leave without a smile on my face. It makes our humble home seem rather dark in comparison. Maybe next year we’ll kick it up a notch?

Taffy Lane has been a tradition in our home since I was a child. After Mass on Christmas Eve we’d bundle into the car and drive around looking at the lights throughout our Orleans neighbourhood, while listening to Norad’s Santa Tracking report on CFRA.

Back then only one or two homes went all out, but they were a sight to behold for sure.

I’m thrilled to be sharing that tradition with my Little Man now. Glad you enjoyed it!

When I lived in Ottawa, I used to drive down this street with my kids every year at Christmastime. Good memories.

Growing up in a Gatineau suburb in the ’60s & ’70s, this is what our whole neighbourhood would look like during “les Fêtes.” Perhaps it was competition between bored housewives or among young dads with big paycheques, but us kids just took it for granted. Another example of the “whatever” Gen-Xers.

We ran through Taffy Lane this year as part of a Running Room group run. It was magical, even as the middle part of an 8 km run. I’ll have to take Reid when we get back to Ottawa for a more leisurely walk-through. I’m glad you’re reminding people about this sort of fun and free event.
