The kindness of smiles (part 2)

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Challenge me, challenge you

Smile!(A continuation of this post.)

Sorry for the really long backstory there, I wanted to explain why (a) why I thought smiling was important and (b) why smiling can be a bit challenging for me at times.

I think we probably can all agree that:

  • Smiling makes you happy.
  • Smiling makes other people feel happy (at least feel good for a split second), and who knows, maybe those brief connections have a farther-reaching impact than we think?

This is going to sound REALLY WEIRD, but since it’s Kindness Week, I’ve decided that from February 22 -24 I’m going to make the extra effort to dole out the smiles. That’s right, I’m going to razzle dazzle as many people as I can with my smile. This includes friends and neighbors, clients, perfect strangers, and my family.

Smiling is so easy, and it makes the world a better place.

I realize that I run the risk of looking like a crazy person, but I think that this will have a positive effect on myself (and hopefully) others.

PLUS: I’m going to keep track. (I haven’t figured that part out yet. Is there an app for that?? Hee hee.)

Would you like to add to my totals? How many smiles can we collect here? That’s the big question.

How not to frighten people! Things to keep in mind:

  • Accompany a smile with a nod and a hello. (I already do this while taking the dog out for a walk. It totally works.)
  • If smiling at a stranger, direct it at their child or dog …. if there is one available. It make smiling less scary. (For them.)
  • Reign in the width and brilliance of the smile in smaller enclosed areas such as elevators and stairwells. (Smile briefly! This is not the place for a Cheshire.)
  • Choose your recipients carefully. I cannot take responsibility for smiles gone awry. Smiling widely at a beefy leather-clad member of a biker gang suffering with poison ivy while sitting across from you at the doctor’s office might not be a good idea.

SMILE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I’m kidding. Obviously. (Ok sort of kidding.)

So I’m issuing a challenge. On Tuesday February 22 through Thursday February 23 (inclusive), I’m going to be tallying the smiles. Join me? Even though Kindness Week is an Ottawa-area initiative (here’s the official kindness blog!) you don’t need to live here to join. Track the smiles you bestow upon others and add your daily totals in the comments below. I will total the numbers on the 25th and we’ll see how many extra smiles made it out into the world during Kindness Week.

Are you up for it?

I’m totally in. Except that we’re totally stuck in the house with the weather for tomorrow. So expect low numbers tomorrow. :)

I am in. I would like to see how much I do smile because I think it is quite a bit. But maybe it isn’t as much as I think. And as I read your posts (I am a little behind) it struck me as to how important this is in my life right now. Not only do my kids deserve those smiles, one of them needs it modeled for him. And I know smiling makes me feel so much better and I need to feel better! :)

Thanks ladies!

I’m at a bit of a loss as to how to count smiles within my family. This morning I realized I do actually smile quite a bit. So with THEM I’m counting extra smiles I wouldn’t have normally smiled. I’m up to ten smiles so far – half of which were to people on the way to school including one stranger. :)

AND I discovered I do have an app for counting. It’s called Tap Counter and it’s within an app called iCatchall. (There might be others too…)

What I like best about Canada is that people smile at you (on the street, in a store etc.). I reciprocated from day one of my arrival here. It makes me feel good and I always feel a connection with the person that I smile at (and who smiles me back). I don’t know if I can do any better, since I smile and I even talk to strangers a lot.

This is a very good idea and I hope a lot of people will join.

Andrea – you can add a smile or two to your tally. Just reading your posts made me smile and laugh out loud – and I appreciate it :)

Great insights as well, my son is starting Grade 7 next year and I’m already frightened for him – just based on my experience.

I’m not a natural smiler either so I’ll try and spread some sunshine in Westboro this week.

Well I logged 30 smiles today, and that doesn’t count all the smiling directed at my family this afternoon and evening, only 5 smiles that I wouldn’t have normally smiled in the morning. (It’s tough to smile before I’ve had my coffee.)

Not bad for someone who works from home!

Funny thing… I found myself SEEKING OUT more people to smile at, and I also realized that people at the grocery store don’t really like to look other people in the eye.

Speaking of which, I’m not counting smiles directed at people who weren’t looking.

The lady behind the deli counter got a couple of big smiles, so did the lady behind me in line at the checkout. All in all, a good day.

;D

I love your missions. Now just going to the grocery store can be a party if it’s an opportunity to beam that lovely smile at more welcome recipients.

That’s fun that you realized you actually do smile a lot.

Here are the final totals:

Feb 22: 30 smiles
Feb 23: 27 smiles
Feb 24: 25 smiles

… for a total of 82 smiles. It’s a little iffy, because I didn’t count smiles at my family, but 82 isn’t bad for someone who works from home! I have more to write about the issue of smiling at strangers but need to collect my thoughts first. More to come. And don’t forget to smile! :D

ah, I’m late for this but as per my comment on the previous post, I’ve been collecting smiles for a long time now and I’ve never had a smile gone awry.

And many a time, it was lead to awesome conversations too.

Smiling is good for the soul
