Ottawa giveaway alert: A Westboro shopping spree from The Guy With the Dog

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Fishbowl patrons|Giveaways and product reviews

I first wrote about Fishbowl patron Sean McCann a.k.a. The Guy With the Dog back in April. He knows Westboro, and I really like that he stands 100% behind the community he lives and works in. He’s passionate about supporting small businesses too (just like I am!) and I love that this is reflected in his choice for a blog giveaway.

Sean has pulled together a Best of the West(boro) package for our giveaway today. It is, essentially, a shopping spree. I am really excited because he’s picked some great shops.

ONE person has the opportunity to win the following bunch of gift cards:

  • $25 to spend at Bridgehead (go there first, to fuel up!)
  • $50 to spend at Lululemon
  • $50 to spend at The Works
  • $25 to spend at MEC
  • $25 to spend at The Candy Store (also a blog patron, woot!)
  • $25 to spend at Bark & Fitz (Obviously!)

Dear winner, promise me you’ll wear your comfy walking shoes before you set out, ok? :)

Here’s what you need to know. Please read carefully!

  • This giveaway is open to anyone residing in the Ottawa area (not just in Westboro), but it is void where prohibited in Quebec. (Sorry mes amis, here’s why.)
  • The winner will have to pick up their prize in a timely manner at Sean’s office. It’s at 1335 Carling Avenue, Suite 200, in Ottawa. (You’ll need to call ahead to arrange for pick up; 613-725-1171 and ask for Stephanie Duffey.)
  • In order for your entry to qualify you must leave a comment below and tell us, what is your favourite destination in Westboro? It doesn’t need to be any of the stores listed, it could be a coffeeshop, restaurant or a park. Let me know!
  • One entry per family please. We want lots of people to have the opportunity to win.
  • If you can’t post your comment here because you’re behind a firewall at work or whatever, you can email it to me for posting: andrea at quietfish dot com (however I cannot be responsible if your entry is misdirected or gets stuck in my Spam folder!)
  • Good karma goes to those who tweet or post about this on their Facebook profiles. I bet you didn’t know this but it actually increases your odds of winning. ;)
  • I will do a random draw of all qualifying entries using Random.org at noon EST on Saturday August 13, 2011.

This is not a requirement of this giveaway, but you should know that The Guy With the Dog is on Facebook and Twitter. I encourage you to connect with Sean and his team for great local info. :)

That’s it! Over to you. Thank you Sean for hosting this giveaway! Hurray for shopping local!

This is an awesome giveaway! Technically I live a street away from Westboro but we eat there all the time. They have awesome resturants and shops. Our favorite resturant is the Village Cafe.

My family loves to attend Westfest so we can see as much of wonderful Westboro as possible. But having to choose one, it would have to be Boomerang Kids – the kids have fun checking things out and I get great deals on the things they need!

90% of the time I make my way over to Westboro I’m going to MEC and then to Bark n’ Fitz. However, I’d have to say my favourite store is Lost Marbles inside Mrs. Tiggywinkles. I love the nerdery in that place and so much of their wares make me squee with delight. :)

There are so many wonderful places in Westboro, I couldn’t possibly pick just one. I live in the Barrhaven area and I make it worth my while to visit Westboro often. Here’s where my family and I love to go:

MEC: I’ve been a member for decades, back when they were in New Edinburgh. But I think the new building is fabulous–so environmentally conscious. It’s one of the best outdoors shops in town.

Newport: Pizza for lunch. What else need I say? A great place for adults and kids.

Bridgehead: Two. Count ‘em: two! After pizza at the Newport, this is where we head for coffee and a treat.

Miss Tiggy Winkles/Lost Marbles: we tell the kids that after MEC, we can let them shop for a change. But secretly, my wife and I get a kick out of the grownup toys too.

So much more to do, but I’ll stop there. And now, I’ll cross my fingers and hope I win the prize! :)

My favorite place in Westboro so far (I’m a newbie) is the food kiosk at Westboro beach. Same owners as Newport (another favorite), but there is a great view of the sunset on top of the delicious pizza!

I am terribly ashamed to admit that I haven’t yet been to Bridgehead. How is that possible?? This would sure give me the push to make a special trip!

I can’t choose just one, but I narrowed it down to Newport (pizza! Elvis!) and Truffle Treasures (gelato! chocolates!). I could easily choose half a dozen more shops, for sure.

As much as Westboro has added many, many awesome shops and restaurants and cool places to visit over the years, I can’t lie – I still love the Newport best of all! And now I am sitting at my desk at 10am with a rumbling belly, thinking about the crispy crust and gooey cheese. Yum.

We drive from Navan to Westboro frequently to spend the day. We have sooo many favourites. But one of our reasons for going is The Candy Store. They have several candy selections that are peanut safe. Instead of saying no to a treat (which I have to do pretty much everywhere we go), I can say yes to my son. The smile says it all. And the staff are always super friendly.

Hey there!
Ever since I worked in the Westboro area 2 summers ago I have been obsessed with trying out every single coffee shop and restaurant in the area. I love mom & pop shops vs the big chains, you know?

I’m not sure if its within the bounds of Westboro, but I absolutely love Petit Bill’s Bistro. If you’re looking for a moderately priced, intimate experience where the staff go above and beyond to make you smile, then this is the place! This is the restaurant known for their famous Lobster Poutine (yum!) but the entire menu is fabulous and fresh!

Often I also take a stop into MEC or Lululemon to see what is on sale and new trends in outdoor activity. One really good hidden find is the Piggy Market. They a local store that offers ready to make meals and produce from sustainable local farmers. I highly recommend the pull pork sandwich from them. My favourite spot in Westboro is decidedly The Newport. Part of the charm is having to walk through a tiny convenience store to get inside the restaurant. They serve a fantastic breakfast including real rye bread(!), amazing pizza, and to-die-for desserts. If you’ve never had the cheesecake, you are missing something very special. Their service is fast, friendly, and I have never been disappointed. When you first walk into The Newport, you just know that Elvis is NOT dead. The King is all over the walls, in pictures, paintings, newspaper clippings, an amazing homage to the man whose hips were x-rated.

My favourite spot in Westboro… is not just one, it is the whole area. I love taking a Saturday and going on my usual wander around the area. My first stop is always MEC, I could spend hours in that store… and try and convince myself I need another backpack or another hobby. I also love Ricoche Reseal, always some great finds and I have sold some of my own goods there too. The afternoon normally always has a break at the Village Cafe, there food is so tasty, or Trio if it is approaching dinner time. Those are my must go to’s but I am always poping into the other stories and inevitably taking a trip into LuluLemon. Outdoors, used finds and good food, thats Westboro to me!

I live in Kanata, so I don’t often get to Westboro. When I do, it’s usually MEC that draws me down there, though I enjoy other places too. My mom’s favourite is Ten Thousand Villages. I’ve also enjoyed Gotta Paint in the past, though I haven’t been there in several years.

Without a doubt my favourite spot in Westboro this time of year is the Westboro beach! Sun, sand, and a patio with frozen margs and good eats from Newport?! What more could you ask for in a place?

I love the Works and Mrs Tiggy’s but they are in my neck of the woods too so I don’t think of them as “Westboro” My favourite destinations are probably Gotta Paint, MEC (!!!) and Mothercraft. Assing I actually understand where Westboro is :)

I must admit that I have multiple favorite places in Westboro as I live just east of Westboro. The following makes a nice morning with our two little girls: a visit to the nice park behind the Ottawa Gymnastics Club followed by a visit to Lost Marbles / Tiggy Winkles to play and shop and and of course lunch at The Works.

A perfect morning. Thanks.

Oh, great giveaway! As for favourite destination, it is hard to say, but probably Iona Park. I love love that it is small enough for the parents to keep an eye on the small kidlets while hanging out in one spot, but big enough for said kidlets to amuse themselves for quite a while. Spent many a day nursing a newborn while my 2 year old played and played, and thankful for it. (And it’s close to grandma’s house!)

We live in rural Kanata, but find our way down there every couple weeks. If I had to name one favourite, it would have to be Truffle Treasures for their spicy hot chocolate in the winter, although we find lots of other reasons to go year round (Ottawa Bagel Shop, Three Tarts Bakery, Piggy Market, Newport…yeah there does seem to be a theme to these…).

I always feel so lucky to be part of the energy in Westboro, and appreciate that so many of the businesses are locally owned, adding personal touches to our neighbourhood. One of my favourites is Wallspace, with beautiful artwork and wonderful jewellery, it often feels like a peaceful retreat. My kids love it too, we always feel welcome and meeting artists and seeing their work certainly helps with their appreciation.

My favorite place is the place that evokes the best memories. That is Bridgehead.

I was introduced to Bridgehead by a girlfriend of mine, who has since moved from Ottawa. As we entered Bridgehead, we were always looking for a spot to sit as there coffee shop is always so busy. Upon finding a location, we would order our Chai Lattes and sit down for what usually was at least a one hour long conversation. We would discuss the woes of the world and how we could find solutions. We would also discuss work and relationship issues, again to which just listening over a steaming cup was always comforting.

It has been two years since my friend has moved, and everytime I go back to Bridgehead, I still feel her presence. The memories keep flooding back of all the laughs we have had and all the solutions we had found.
Thank you Bridgehead for serving a great Chai and offering a milieu for friends to meet and share.
