Many years ago, when I was working full-time at Former Job, I had an idea. This wasn’t any old idea, this had Potential written all over it. It was in no way work-related, although a small component had to do with a part of my work.
The place I worked published a newspaper. The circulation of which, I am guessing, was between 20,000 – 40,000. At the time, the newspaper offered free classified ads. And they were submittable online.
I decided that I would submit a classified ad. It would be the first part of a story that would unfold in twenty word segments, weekly, in the classifieds. It was going to be a dialogue between two people, formerly lost to one another, then found.
I wrote a few lines to start it all off. It was great. I sweated over each word. I submitted it. And waited. But the ad manager approached me afterwards and told me he couldn’t run it. I was disappointed. It could have been so good.
I have looked for a digital copy of what I submitted, but I can’t find it.
Tomorrow, I’ll share a recent ad (not mine!) that got me thinking about this again.
