my quest for sweats

Posted by andrea tomkins in: Oh! Things!

I have surpassed my expectations re: Gym-Related Excitement. I am enjoying my time at the gym so much so that I may be evolving into a gym rat.

What characterizes a gym rat?

- I look forward to going to the gym.
- I feel sad when I can’t make it to the gym.
- I feel virtuous when I am leaving the gym.

Ironically, the one outfit I own that makes me look the absolute dumpiest is the one I most often wear to the gym. People see me going to the gym in it, at the gym, around the gym, and coming home from the gym. If I’m feeling particularly peppy they may even see me hoofing it around my neighborhood (yes, in this same unflattering clothing) after I’ve done my workout.

When I started this health thing I quietly promised myself that if I was “good” (“good” being very loosely defined) until the first of December,  I was going to splurge on a fabulous (not to mention expensive) new working-out outfit from Lululemon. You know, as a reward for how “good” I’ve been.

But the fact that cutie-bootie shorts from that store were probably going to run me about $80 has been sticking in my craw ever since I made that promise to myself.

And I needed shorts, NOW. My vanity wasn’t going to make it to Dec 1. My current gym shorts (which I alternate with black yoga pants) are higher-waisted (!) and a shade too tight around the waist. They make me look like Erkel  AND give me muffin-top. They don’t do anything for me whatsoever, and when I wear them I feel dumpy and gross.

But I am not dumpy and gross. When I look good I feel good. And I needed to feel good at the gym.

On Friday, the heavens opened and the Gods of Fitness Gear smiled down upon me. I found myself at the Superstore at College Park. Unlike our local SS, the one at College Park carries a complete line of Joe Fresh clothing. Veni, vidi, vici.  I saw, tried on, and bought two tops ($14 each, one in a light blue with a V and the other in black with a built-in shelf) AND pair of black yogic hot pants in a capri length for only $24. Not shorts – I know – but they make my trunk look totally fetch. Or should I say Fresh? Nevermind, I’m just a happy little gym rat.

The Obligatory Blurb

My name is Andrea and I live in the Westboro area of Ottawa with my husband Mark and our dog Piper who is kind of a big deal on Instagram. We also have two human offspring: Emma (24) and Sarah (22). During the day I work as a writer at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre. I am a longtime Ottawa blogger and I've occupied this little corner of the WWW since 1999. The Fishbowl is my whiteboard, water cooler, and journal, all rolled into one. I'm passionate about healthy living, arts and culture, travel, great gear, good food, and sharing the best of Ottawa.
