So I’ve been sending emails here and there and sloooowly getting information about the old Maison Jeanne d’Arc building on Kenwood Ave.
I was curious to know why this building (which was apparently built in the 1920s) doesn’t have special heritage designation. I haven’t figured that out yet.
But first, this is from the Zoning By-law Amendment Proposal Summary
Description of Site and Surroundings
The subject property is presently occupied by five buildings. One is an ecclesiastical building, while the others are a school, a residence, a garage and a portable building. The surrounding blocks are predominantly occupied by low-density residential dwellings. To the south, on the portion of the property that is to be retain the present zoning, is a retirement home. ÂDetails of Requested Zoning By-law Amendment Proposal
The applicant is proposing to rezone the subject property from minor institutional to a residential R3 zoning that would permit single detached dwellings on lots which are approximately 10 metres in width and semi-detached dwellings on lots that would have an approximate width of 7.2 metres for each unit. The total number of units proposed is twenty.
The applicant here is Barry Hobin and Associates, architect. He is actively developing in this neighborhood.
Next, this email I received from Heritage Ottawa.
“Thanks for contacting Heritage Ottawa about this. As a resident of the Westboro/McKellar area I am very familiar with this building and like you very concerned that it may not have been assessed for its heritage value.
I have passed your concern to the heritage planners at City Hall who are looking into it. We may also discuss it at our Heritage Ottawa board meeting which is tomorrow night. Getting it designated would require strong community support at the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee (LACAC).
Professor Bruce Elliott has written the history of old Nepean, including Westboro, and lives in the area, (near Kenwood on Broadview). He may be able to help to establish the historic importance of this building. He has given heritage tours of Westboro for Heritage Ottawa.
Another influential neighbour, who actually lives on Kenwood, is former federal Transport Minister, David Collenette.
